Hi there everyone, I'm new here, so I feel the need to introduce myself a bit to feel at home.

Okay, now that that's done...I was wondering if anyone had info on doing a cleanse without buying the boxes of stuff at the market. I think a friend once told me something about water, lemon juice, and cayenne?

In the past couple of weeks I have stopped smoking, given up all types of soda, and am trying very hard to cut out meat (I was a veg for eight years, but somehow it's harder this time..I guess I am lacking the exuberance I had as a teen!). We also have started swimming and working out. I feel like I should do a cleanse to help rid myself of some of the toxins I am carrying around. One caveat, I am nursing a toddler, and all the boxes say do not use while nursing. But my friend was nursing when she did hers and had no ill effects on her toddler, and he is not getting his major source of nutrients from my milk, mostly just comfort.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

i'd just eat "clean," healthy food to be on the safe side and tak to a doctor...lots of fruits, grains, vegetables, lean meats/dairy..nuts. Your body will cleanse by eating healthier.

I'd probably wait for your child to be weaned before doing a lemon cleanse. It's basically a fast, all you consume food-wise is your self-made lemonade (fresh squeezed lemons, organic, dark maple syrup, and cyanne pepper) and an herbal laxative tea to keep you regular. Even if your baby isn't getting most of his nutrients from your milk, it seems like if he's still nursing at all, it'd be better for him to wait.

and any cleanse dumps it all into the metabolic system, so everything could cross the blood barrier into milk.

We advise that nursing moms NOT do intensive "cleansing" while breastfeeding. It is possible (although we are not sure) that toxins will be dumped into the milk. Best NOT to do this, until a few months or years from now, when your child is weaned.

Also, many mothers have found that things like cayenne can upset their babies tummies. Some babies are fine (look at babies in India and other countries where spicy food is the norm, these babies are always fine, but they are used to it in the womb, and from early infancy, and some of these mothers introduce spice into their diets slowly.)

Wait on the Cleanse. There is no overriding reason to do it immediately, and eating healthily, like Megara and others have said, is best while nursing.

We also, for the same reason advise mothers not to lose large quantities of weight quickly during nursing, because toxins are released when the fat is broken down so quicky. Take your time, and, if you really need a cleanse, waiting a few months or even few years, won't make that big of a difference. You baby is doing so well on your milk, it also makes no sense to wean him now, as he is worse off without your milk, than you are without the cleanse.

Good eating and healthy living is all you and the baby need now.

    Love and peace,

ps, the meat is totally your decision. Some people have no problem giving up meat. I was a veg*n and never missed meat at al, until I got pregnant with my first child. I now find, after six pregnancies and four live births, that I somehow need the concentrated protein. That does not mean everyone does. Some people do really well on veg diet. I just wonder, if the rest of your diet is really healty, and you are still craving meat, if it might just be something you really need. Have you been checked for real clinical anemia? That may explain the desire for meat. (this test must be done by an MD, in a regular lab, and checking your hematocrit, or number of red blood cellls in a small unit of blood. Also, other tests will check for other forms of anemia. There is no other way to really know if you are clinically anemic.)

You have to explore your own life and decide if you need the meat, or just want it.

I don't eat much meat, but when I need it, I need it. JMO, if you feel, morally, that you just can't eat it, then you will have to find other ways to get the things that meat contains. Many veg*ans are very good at this.

babies in exotic locales like Oklahoma, Maggie?
I am a total spice fiend and everyone including the LLL mamas said Arlo would get sick from it. Nope. But if I was poor and low on spice carrier, he would get upset at bland milk!
I literally had to make sure I had garlic and peppers in the house at all times.

BREAKFAST FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Fifteen minutes before you are ready to eat breakfast squeeze the juice of one lemon in a medium glass of hot water and drink it. The rest of the meal consists of 250 ml of fruit juice (orange or grape), 5 level tablespoons of cottage cheese, 250g fresh fruit - you can eat only one kind of fruit or combine fruits in a salad (no bananas or avocados). You may drink one cup of tea, with milk and sugar if desired. Between breakfast and lunch you should drink all the vegetable broth (recipe provided) as you can hold. Also eat fresh raw fruit. Make a large quantity of the vegetable broth and store in the refrigerator.

LUNCH FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Drink two cups of vegetable broth during the meal. Make a salad by chopping fresh, raw vegetables in a bowl. Use four from the following list: Asparagus, beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, celery, green peppers, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, spinach, squash, tomatoes. For dessert, slice fresh fruit and serve with drizzle of honey. You may drink a small glass of fresh milk if desired. Between lunch and dinner drink all the vegetable juice you desire and eat all the fresh fruit you want.

DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Drink two cups of vegetable broth during the meal. Select two or three of the different kinds of vegetables listed and steam-cook them with a little butter. Eat a generous helping of each. Eat a medium slice of whole-wheat bread with butter. For dessert, eat a fresh fruit salad. If you feel hungry after dinner, eat as much fresh fruits as you want and drink vegetable juice.

LOL! Breastfed babies LOVE garlic milk. There was a study that showed that when garlic was introduced into the mom's diet, and got into the milk, the babies drank MORE of it.

Variety is the spice of life. I do remember Sage getting really fussy from Szeshwan Tofu stir fry about 3 times, (took me that long to admit it, so I had to give it up for a while.) Every baby is different. I'lm partly Italian and we can't cook without garlic. :)
