Everyone keeps telling me about Grateful Dead, but I have no music of theirs, neither do my folks or friends. They sound completely groovy, but I've only heard a sample from Box of Rain. Please enlighten me further; I am embarrassed that I don't know more!
Oh, thats to easy: Go here: http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?cat=Grateful Dead and you can download just about every greatful dead show from 1965 to the mid 90's... The dead may also be touring this summer... I would recommend you go... Thier albums are ok.. good tunes, but its the "jam" that brings magic to thier songs... Also, if your new to jambands, I would also recommend you give phish, sci, ratdog, and the almands a listen too peace Socratez
Hey, its really no big deal... just goto archive.org - or btree (never used btree)... but you can download shows from many different jambands... the Cheese, ratdog, etc... its all there, and its all ya need.. you would never be able to download everything.. they have terabites of stuff... I just download the string cheese at the philmore (amazing show March 23, 2002... also available on DVD).. its in .shn format, sounds awesome, but that format makes it about 1 gig after the d/l... PS: Its all legit and legal.. the bands not only don't mind, but they encourage it. Happy downloading...
if you really diged the sample of "box of rain", then i think the perfect place for any person to start listening to the grateful dead is "american beauty". im not a huge deadhead, so i dont really listen to many of their live jams, but as far as studio albums go, it doesnt get much better then that. if you enjoy "american beauty", then another album im sure you'd like is "workingmans dead".
To some this may be more "mainstream", but I love "Touch of Grey". Never fails to put me in a good mood!
..www.gdradio.net... all dead all the time,,, ceptin for hour long shows of other folks like dylan n phish n stuff...
I'll defend any In the Dark Head's right to love this song. It was the first song I heard in my car being brought home from the hoospital in 89 after a heart attack. I can honestly say it saved my depressed life. I still get tears running down my face when i hear it, esp with a tribute band (ie, Schwag) Oh, I'm pulling this into the Jam band sub forum! Hope you get many more answers here.
Whats up Crissy Eden, Great to see some more people getting into The Dead. For me, when i started to get into The Dead I had to get into the studio albums before i could really begin to understand the Dead's sound so I could get into some of the deep jams. Some of my suggestions would be, American Beauty Aoxomoxoa Workingmans Dead Anthem of the Sun Europe 72' is a great live one to get into earlier. Good Luck!!
Hey Deadhead: Yea, with me it was the oposite... I never really cared for any of the "dead studio" stuff... (no jams)... I caught the Dead back in the early 90's... w/ Jerry... it was cool... Space kinda grabbed me... but I think I was too young and nievive at the time... Then, I caught the dead in 03 (w/ Joan)... This time, after a very long day walking around shakedown... we hit the show... sunk deep into the jams.. woke up and said... whooooa... that was incredible.. Now I've been d/l a lot more of thier stuff from the past... I think for many its an aquired taste...
