IMO LC's never written a bad piece of poetry. Maybe some of his musical offerings have been on the goofy side.....e.g. Hallelujah is a beautiful song, rendered by k.d.lang, Rufus Wainwright.. or Jeff Buckley. (and I'm sure many others I haven't heard) But Cohen's own version just falls sort of flat. Of course he's got so many classics. 10 New Songs - Cohen's first collaboration with Sharon Robinson, is a moody, mellow, mostly electronica record. All I can say is that it's a motherfucker of a record, a masterpiece, and everyone with a soul and >50 brain cells needs to hear it. Listen to it through twice and you will not be able to stop listening to it, for months. Well, that was us anyway. Three years later I still think it's the best album so far this decade. Cohen may be old now, but he's sharp as a scalpel and his combination of self-awareness and tragic, poetic beauty is incomparable, it's honed to perfection here. These are the songs he wrote while living on a Zen monastery for five years, and yet they sound like they emanated from somewhere guttural, from deep within a heart of darkness. For those who want to obsess on it, the disc is actually Cohen's interpretation of Dante's Inferno. (really, he's said so.. and there's a 50-page essay out there on it, on leonardcohenfiles.com) As an aside, this record also helped nudge me off the analog snobwagon, because the mp3 files sounded lovely (on the stereo), while my vinyl copy is a shitty transfer, albeit one I'm glad to have in my collection.
our search function leaves a lot to be desired as it clears at each crash. http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120799 wanna resurrect that one or go with yours? the old one is a few pages long.
Makes sense. Nothing on 10 New Songs in that thread... I've changed the title, let's see if this one takes off. uh.. well, I tried to change the title to 10 New Songs-Leonard Cohen. Can you do anything about my 'Guest' status? I hate being powerless.
titles cannot be changed unless the thread is being moved... which is why you see so many misspellings
