so I'm on a big Bruce Cockburn kick right now, just thaught I'd share me love for his music! I don't know if it can be called folk, but I don't know what else you would call it so that title will have to do
If a treeeeeee falls in the forest does anyone hear the forest fall??? think he might be rather Canadian-specific.... like so many Canadian artists. Meaning, Canadians know him, the rest of the world does not. Maybe the Europeans know him? They seem get a lot of Canadian music over there, tours and such.
I saw Bruce Cockburn walking around near my friend's place in Toronto. It was weird. I stopped looked at him, then said "Why does he look so familiar?" Then it hit me, "Bruce Cockburn!" My friend had never heard of him...
Bruce is a great songwriter and performer. He's also a dedicated activist, and a 'socialist Christian'. He's spent many years in Central America and been a very outspoken critic of US foreign policy. MTV famously banned his video for If I Had A Rocket Launcher..probably his only shot at a major hit song. But his discography is enormous, I have a bunch of his LP's but probably less than half of what he's done. Night Vision and Salt, Sun and Time are amazing albums from the 70's. And I love Stealing Fire, released in '84 I believe.
Strange, I was listening to Bruce Cockburn when I came across this thread! I think he's a great (and underrated) artist... and yes "If a Tree Falls" is one of his best...it's such a great song! I also really like "Wondering where the Lions Are." I always take his albums out of my local lib.
He has some great songs. I just added 'If I Had A Rocket Launcher' to the Video forum. http://www.hipforums.com/modules.php?name=Videos&file=viewlinkinfo&lid=606&gid=0
