i was just wondering if anyone had any experience with or knew anything about the Bufo alvarius (colorado river toad), it's venom contains 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin. supposed to be a psychoactive brew, but i can't find much about it. even Erowid has very little on the subject and i figure if it's a pleasant experience, a 150 dollar frog might not be a bad investment for a endless supply of the closest thing to acid i'll ever come up with. let me know what you know/think and thanks in advance for the help.

Dont even bother. Plus the toad will not like the type of environment that you will provide. Those little toads love open spaces, and the warm environment they come from. They get very very unhappy with enclosed places. Not to mention these toads are very beautiful and quite intelligent.

Plus its nothing like acid, and only lasts like 20 minutes.

Seriously, it's a pretty abhorrent move to do that to a living thing for the purpose of drug recreation.

Actually, I do not think bufos enjoy the love of open spaces, as you have stated. There are alot more amatuer herpetologists that keep toads and have NO probelms with providing an adequate enviornment for them! I have encountered mean bufos and nice ones. And every one I have seen in captivity, have been well taken care of, loved, and they are quite HAPPY with what enviornment they have been provided with. Anyone that truely loves thier pet friends, will take care of them responsibily and properly! Just like any other pets... they are all individuals! If a person can properly care for a pet, then they should have the right to do so, if they choose!

And.... I bet you are one of those dime a dozen individuals that will go in great depth to explain, why growing and eventually killing a marijuana plant in order to smoke it "to get high", is way different than someone that keeps a pet that can "get them high"? (without killing it at that)!

Why is it right to grow a living plant and confine it to an artificial enviornment, to end up killing it in order to get high? Or make money off of it. Last time I heard about the marijuana sales estimates ... it is in billions! Where is the billion dollar market in killing toads to get high? Where are the home invasions in search of toads? Where are the toad mills that make it such a horrible thing to keep a reptile as a pet?

Do you have issues with keeping Bufos as a pet or do you have issues with any living creatures kept as pets? If you have issues with keeping any LIVING creatures as pets... the you have a hell of alot of libraries to liberate plants from!!! Plants are alive... are they not?

Oh wait... plants do not show emotion... OR DO THEY!!!

Could you please further my understanding of your understanding on why pets should not be kept?

    Az

bufotenin is strongly hallucinogenic, but it's also a neurotoxin, and supposedly, very painfull.

Just buy some spores. Neurotoxins are bad.

The main problem with toads is how to dose correctly. The amount of bufotenin in the toad´s slime can vary very much. Unless you don´t have basic equipment for chemical analysis, licking toads is like playing Russian roulette.

I have an issue with an animal being kept from its natural environment for the sole purpose of 'milking' the poison from it to induce a drug trip. The difference of opinion here comes from where one draws the line of moral considerability; would it be right to hold a human being in captivity so as to forcibly collect the fluids from it for recreation?

^^^ i had actually intended on drying the venom on a piece of glass then scraping it up and smoking it with some pot, the thought of licking a toad doesn't appeal to me. to the person concerned about the toad's welfare, i can assure you i don't intend on keeping it in a trash can it's whole life, i have a 35 gallon terrarium and would set him up right, just because i intended to use it as a means of obtaining "recreational drugs" doesn't mean i don't recognise it as a living thing. the general consensis seems to be that it's most likely not worth the hassle so most likely i won't bother but has anyone actually done it, and can explain what it's like, just to satisfy my curiosity? also, does anyone have anything concrete about any possible health issues involved as even erowid has very little on the subject. thanks again.

the diffirence is, we're not talking about a human, we're talking about a frog and as far as holding a animal in captivity, it's called owning a pet and millions of people do it (minus the drug part). since you're obviously a animal rights activist i'll acknowledge that there will be no arguing this point with you but leave on this note: humans have been training, working, eating(meat, eggs, milk, etc.) and otherwise taking advantage of animals since the beginning of time, and it's because of the same reason we're sitting behind a computer making conversation with someone hundreds of miles away you've never met and cows eat grass and live outside. we are for lack of a better word, superior beings. get over it.

I live in Arizona and I see these toads first hand. I know them quite well. I actually saved a Bufo from a nasty chlorine swimming pool when I was little. She was huge and missing a leg. I was 10, and the last time I saw her was when I was a sophmore in highschool.

The milking process is not that easy as you think. Honestly. It is acutally quite painful, and sometimes the toads make a distressful sound when you grab them. It kind of sounds like a chicken...They get stressed out. Think about it. Its not nothing like milking a cow. You actually have to put some muscle into making the glands spray. Its not a gentle hand. Those glands that you want the 5-meo-DMT have evolved as a last resort to protect the toad from a young coyote or someother predator. A predator that has its mouth around its body. Its not a pleasant experience for the toad.

35 gallons is nothing. You should make a trip to Arizona in the summer. Do some research. Make it a special experience. These toads live for a looooooooong time. They are special desert animals that are picky about their environment.

Perhaps you need to first understand/dream 5-meo-DMT first?

People have not been "smoking" the toad for a long time. I do not think the indigenous people had torch lighters and glass pipes way back then. Now they do around here but its for meth.

I dont have a problem with people smoking the toad venom. I have a problem with a enslaving animal just for drug pleasures. Its not even a true mutual relationship. On top of that he has never even experienced 5-meo-DMT....Its nothing like acid. He may not even like it. Its not necessarily fun or pleasurable. It is so different....
I would expect a psychonaut to be more conscious of this. An animal that is quite intelligent and absolutely amazing if you experience them first hand. They live for a long time, and love to explore in the summer. Not to mention they are very social with their own kind.
Someone made a point that we eat animals, but we have to eat to live. We do not have to have 5-meo-dmt to survive. If given the chance to bring less suffering to life on this earth I would opt out on housing a toad.

If you are truly interested, just come to AZ during the monsoon. [IMG]

    Goodluck.

so if you weren't usin the toad for drug use, then it wouldn't be enslaving the toad?

No. Because you could go out in the the right area in AZ and find lots of them. It only takes a couple of mins to get the venom. You could load up for a year. No joke. Then you let it go to jump, sing, and mate with its fellow toads. Its happy story for everyone, and probably youd never meet again.
