Canada's been bashing the US over Kyoto for a while now. We signed you didn't, nyah nyah. See, in Canada we love the environment-- we're on the leading edge of waste disposal and environmental technology. Our solutions are robust and green, yes, Canadians love a clean country that smells as fresh as the forests we're famous for (uh, clearcutting...). How do we do it? It's pretty simple, really. We just put all the garbage on trucks and then send them to landfills in Michigan! ~400 truckloads a day from Toronto alone. discuss..
You know, I have to agree for the most part. But yesterday, I was out driving with my dad on Six Nations reserve, in southern ontario, and we must have seen .. 2-300 bottles and popcans littered all on the sides of the road, within about 2km of road.. We're gonna go collect em all next weekend when I visit, though.
Saw a lovely movie in my tech class a while back.....it was about us wondeful canadians....sending all our beautiful computer and technology trash we didnt want all the way to china to pollute their rivers and drinking water to give them cancers and diseases because we refuse to do the recycling here
I think I've seen that as well. I sometimes look around at my fellow Canadians and want to ask "what the fuck are you thinking?" or be more blunt and ask "is your brain turned on?" I get the impression in Canada that it is "uncool" to love the planet. So its cool that we (or the following generations) end up living in mountains of filth? End up dying of bizarre cancers caused by an exposure to decaying electronics?
This is a problem plaguing all cities, problem is recycling is not economically sound with the technology currently used. We have to do other things like enforcing the packaging industry to use materials that are more feasibly recycled like PET (no 1 plastic) instead of PS. Toronto doesn't recycle PS cos it's too expensive. We also have to reduce less, I've even entertained the idea of a returnable/reusable packaging system, I go into more detail in my sig.
My community (an hour west of Toronto) is soon introducing green boxes for compostable food waste, as well as a one trash-container-per-week limit on all households.
There is this nasty landfill here right next to the interstate. I swear the piles get bigger and bigger everytime I drive by. No one here really recycles anymore. A lot of wealthy people live here, so it's nothing to them.
Yup...but us cats in Michigan send our shit up there. Funny how that works, huh? Damn, people just need to start recycling!
Reduce, Re-use, Recycle! Our planet has become one big garbage can! Anyone here read Adbusters magazine? I have seen some pretty nasty pics and articles about waste. Canada is dirty in many areas. Borders are just lines on a map, the wind and rain don't stop at customs.
Recycling, or rather down-cycling is not the answer... if we rely on recycling, and recycling predominately materials that not feasible to recycle as is currently the case, than taxpayers/politicians WILL push for incinerators. I don't like it BUT IT WILL HAPPEN if we continue to push for recycling in as unsustainable fashion. Current recycling has to change, read my links.
Canada releases more pollutants per person than America - how much of this is due to the colder climate is debatable. But I wish you'd lose your smug attitude.
We're really not going to get anywhere debating which "nation" is better or worse than another in terms of polluting...
