Pot laws in Canada. What's the Reality?

I've heard and read many things about smoking pot in canada. What's the reality? Are there places where you can legally puff away? Is it decriminalized?
How about purchasing small quantities? What are the real rules?

Well there was a time in 2003 when marijuana was completely legal as there was no prohibition law in place. This happened because a court judge in 2002 ruled that the government had one year to provide legal medical marijuana to the citizens of Canada who are qualified or all marijuana would become legal. However, I believe it was the woman at the top of our health ministry, somebody in charge decided that they were 'uncomfortable' with marijuana being used for medicine . So, the one year limit put on the government expired and the pot laws were stricken. Unfortunately, this was generally not acknowledged by our government and our police, so people continued to be arrested. Later that year the marijuana laws were put back in place. So marijuana is illegal again. The worst part is, even though marijuana was legal all of last summer, we never really got to see what legal marijuana would be like in Canada.


Last year there was also a proposed bill endorsed by the last prime minister that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, reducing possession to a ticket offense. On the other side of the coin, this bill also proposed stricter penalties for dealers and growers of marijuana.

The proposed bill died in parliament, but is supported by the current prime minister and there is talk of the bill coming back to life.

This is my understanding of it, anyway.

Details aside, at the moment it is a criminal offense to possess, sell, or buy marijuana in Canada, unless you have permission from the government to use it medically.

the "street" laws, In BC its friggin legal.. seriously, lets not even bring BC into the pot discussion its like friggin amsterdam. lets talk ontario, cuz thats where I am, and thats where americans go, to Toronto.

There are many hed shops in the T dot, and in hot box cafe and roach o rama, you can smoke your pot, in the back of the cafe... you cannot sell or buy there though....
in toronto there is a park called Grange park, thats a teen stoner central... Ive smoked there before, its nice.

In ontario, cops are usually nicer... like "so who's been smoking dope?" followed by "dont let me catch you again", we dont like to waste our time and money on young stoners...
see the bottom line is, even the policemen/policewomen feel that the laws are too strict and they relax on it....
thst is, if you dojnt flaunt it... if you smoke from a joint or pipe in plain public view, you will be charged.
in canada, it is illegal, it is relaxed. Its still against the law... but the law isnt really strict.

at anyrate: there both mostly right. the only corrections i'd make were that it was never legal in canada, it was decrimed for a bit but never legal. if you got caught with an ounce you could be charged with trafficing, or with a plant, you'd be charged with growing but if you were caught with a joint they couldnt do anything to you. in reality this didnt change anything, as cops don't charge people for possesion of a joint unless your on probation, your behind the wheel, or breaking other laws at the same time.

it's also technically legal to smoke on your property and the police can't do anything, but if someone calls the cops on you all the police have to say is that it smelled like you were growing in order to obtain a warrant and raid your house.

in conclusion: fuck the police. fuck fuck fuck the police.

even in ontario its very relaxed...hell, even toronto has the hotbox cafe where you can smoke without any problems...cops know about it, they don't care...yeah its illegal, but whats that matter if its not enforced?

i saw marc emery smoking joints with a bunch of other political marijuana people there one morning. kind of ruined the atmosphere, having the majority of the patrons present arguing about little details of policy...

 

whats it like in BC?

 

is it still a criminal offence now?

wow canada is just like here...none of the cops give a shit, people smoke it on the streets in london and the cops just take it off them and stamp it out if anything, everyone smokes dope in london

 

u can have 15grams. or less.100 doller fine...no charges. 15g or more. is a possetion charge.. 3 plants can be grown for personal medial use(some provinces) but 3 dr must sign off on the section 56 which is the medical mj law. however pentleys for growing have gone up. 10-15 plants is around 11 years of jail time. oh and B.C. stand for British Columbia.....its a province. also for changing laws and stuff... www.pottv.com, www.emeryseeds.com and www.canibisculture.com usally have updated info on laws and such in canada
