Any first hand experiences combing the sacred cacti with a maoi such as rue or caapi. I have read that it greatly cuts down on the amount of cactus needed to ingest. For example one report stated that 12 inches that was normally needed for a substantial experience was cut down to 3 inches. Any safety concerns with this combination?

unconfirmed; I think I've read/heard that an MAOI doesn't have much of an effect on mescaline, I'll have to double check. I also was curious about this a couple of years ago.

Hey thanks for the links polymer... like you said doesn't sound like it's worth taking the chance.

If you did your homework you would know that you would probably end up in the ER if you tried this.

well thats exactly the problem. My "homework" turned up conflicting reports on this combo and there are several positive reports listed on erowid and elsewhere about combining maois's with cactus. I never turned up any first hand experiences that said this combo was negative.

in theory, it's a worthwhile endeavor, if the cactus contained only mescaline; that's the problem though. Cacti alkaloids (particularly the Trichocerus Panachoi variety) varies greatly, and it's very difficult (if not impossible) to determine what's present, and in what amount, without instrumentation. It really depends on what alkaloids are present in the enthogen material; for instance, drinking an extract of Phalaris Tuberosa (a grass) with an MAOI, may make you see yellow spots, bust out into a rash, and sky rocket your blood pressure, because Tuberosa has Bufotenine,

sonic, if you think it may be worth a shot, try it (in small doses); MAOIs are very competitive inhibitors. some propranolol or pindolol may be handy in case the slim chance you develop hypertensive effects, as these are effective beta-blockers.

mushrooms with MAOIs are tried and true.

ahh, I found this after looking more closely through that second link ("ask erowid")

"Tyramine is not believed to be dangerous with harmine or harmaline since it readily displaces either one. The harmala alkaloids are highly selective and highly reversible MAOIs. They are quite different than some of the prescription drugs such as Phenelzine (Nardil) or Tranycypromine (Parnate) which actually bind irreversibly to the MAO enzymes. With irreversible MAOIs, restoration of normal MAO metabolic function requires that more of the enzymes be produced by the body."

for some reason, I was thinking of the hardcore MAOIs, like Nardil; taking those with recreational drugs is a big risk.

syrian rue and caapi both contain harmaline; you shouldn't even need a beta-blocker.
go ahead and try it if you wish, you should be fine.

Increased norepinephrine release is also compounded by stimulants, including amphetamines and other amines. Due to the amphetamine properties of the phenethylamine entheogens, mescaline and MDMA ("Ecstasy"), a hypertensive crisis could ensue as a result of their combination with an MAOI. Such an interaction has been reported in the literature. --Kaskey GB (1992). MAPS

The indiginous people of the South America pretty much know all the combinations of how to use these plants and which ones work out best. There is no history of them doing B.Caapi and Pedro(or other cactus) togather that I know of. That may be a sign that its not a good mix. There are better ways to get there.

the issue is tyramine in plants, and other alkaloids with nasty side effects (like bufotenine) ; tyramine and MAOIs are not a good mix, feels really shitty.

if you have B. Cappi and P. Hermalia (syrian rue), why not make some ayahuasca? tahts two out of the three ingridients.

the syrian rue is an alternative (to caapi)

    b. caapi + p.viridis are the traditional 1-2 punch :)
the caapi has the MAOI (harmaline), and p. viridis has the dmt.
