how many agree? i would like to see what the people on this forum think. most people consider led zeppelin to be a heavy metal band, if not the first. i say that they had some proto-heavy metal songs but they weren't a heavy metal band because they played way too many genres to be called just heavy metal. black sabbath, on the other hand, is heavy metal because every song had the same kind of...vibe to it.

i think led zeppelin is more progressive, if not that then maybe proto-progressive because they were very album oriented, they did lots of work in the studio to get a beautiful final piece, they had many songs that broke the 3 minute barrier, they thought outside the box and used different genres of music and different guitar tunings and were very eclectic, etc.

what do you guys think? i mean, i know they weren't full out progressive like some other '70s bands but i definitely think they were to some degree.

oh ya dude i tottaly agree. Zepp were really the ones who brought it mainstream but it was more by chance. if compared to some of the metal songs of today its nowhere as violent or angry. they were about the sound and the feeling you get when listening, well IMHO anyways so ya

    anyone else?

I would not say Led Zeppelin is entirely heavy metal. Because, well, it wasn't. Look at the Houses of the Holy album...that sure wasn't heavy metal. I'd say it was more reggae than anything else.

So I'd have to agree with you. I'd say it was more progressive...

Look at Tool, though. Some would consider them a heavy metal band. I'd say they were more progressive rock, than heavy metal. So I guess it's subjective, also.

I dont think Led Zeppelin can be classified into one category, they had blues (You shook me), prog rock (no quarter), reggae (d'yer m'ker), folk (bron yr aur), heavy rock (In my time of dying), you name it...

So that would be progressive then...? right?
Pink Floyd had Blues too, Syd came up with the name combining too blues cats. The Demo of Money was also a kind of bluesy song.

how silly am i? i didnt read your post properly and i thought you were being sarcasrtic there. Sorry but I'm feeling a bit defensive today...i've had people judging my taste in music way too long in real life, and it seems like i innately react negatively when someone quotes me in their posts...:p
    lets start again shall we?

couldnt ya just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, and not try to classify it? some bands/artists change their style so much, they just cant be put into one genre. Kellys got the right idea, its just Zeppelin

well i tend to think that progressive really isn't a genre. because it doesn't really have a specific sound to it. but yeah i do see your point. just love it for what it is.

well, at least you could say they play rock. a lot of different styles.
the have both progressive as hardrock elements but couldn't choose if had to put them in one of those boxes
