Ive been flowering my Chrystal bud for five weeks now. The hairs on some of the buds are %50 red and the hairs are fat on the bottoms. I know five weeks is not long enough for a mature bud , but some of these branches are looking to be ready any day now. Is it common for this strain to have red hairs as its natural coloring? Could it be watering them to much with a flowering food. ( i only use water now in case it is that) give me all info on this strain , or my problem so i dont do the wrong thing. Im use to growing northern lights. Also , I really think i have a male/female plant. Will it stay this way , or go one or the other way as it gets older? Pull it? thanks
As regards the male/female plant it will stay that way, if its in a separate pot move it else where, if this cant be done chop it unless there are only one or two male parts. You can carefully watch the plant removing the male bits as they grow but with still a couple of weeks to go removing it now giving the other plants more room to grow sounds the best option. As regards the crystal I have never grown it but its very unlikely to be ready after 5 weeks . Seven weeks would still be classed as relatively quick. Your brown hairs are most likely where the male/female (hermaphrodite) plant has pollinated the female buds. When a males pollen hits the two white hairs on a female bud they turn brown and start to produce a seed. Get the males out quick.
As the bud matures, hairs die off, and change color. Some turn brown, some red, and some even purple. If you over -fed, look for burnt tipped leaves, of leaf curling. Is the stems changing color? Sometimes if you over fed, it can block other nutrients, and cause a deficiency, which will turn the stem ( from the stalk to the leaf) red or purple. And sometimes thats just the genetics, its hard to tell. As for the hermie, its gonna stay a hermie, just watch out for the male sacs. Although if you miss one and it does seed a few pistils, save the seeds. Most likely those seeds will be mostly female, thats how dutch passion came out with feminized seeds.
I forgot to add, get yourself 15 bucks and go to radio shack. They sell a lighted magnifying glass that has a 60-100 power zoom. dont look at the hairs to determine when its done. Look at the tricnomes, when those are about half turned amber, you are at the point of diminishing returns, and it is ready. Patience is the hardest part of the grow, and the most important. Get the glass, and you 'll never have to guess when the plant is ready.
The buds will always look done well before they are. If you can't get your hands on a microscope (Radio Shack dealio) figure that it will be at least 6-7 weeks minimum with 8 being most common. Buds will always look extra good on the plant around 4-6 weeks. But once they dry they will not look as good and will be airy and possibly taste immature. The absolute biggest mistake a new grower makes is harvesting too early. I suggest waiting at least 2 more weeks.
i m growing my first plants but i have a pic on my thread that shows you when to harvest i tried posting it here but cant figure it out for some reason but if you look at "first plants" theres a good picture ref. on there check it out let me know if it helps wpot
