Anyone out there have parents of family members that are vegetarian? Many of my relatives are members of the Seventh-day Adventist church and are therefore vegetarian.
Not me, my parents are meat-osauruses. So are my sisters, my husband, and my in-laws. It's just me... and now maybe my daughter as well. love, mom
My step mother was "veg" when she met my dad 26 years ago. I suspect she was a secret fish eater. That ended quickly, but she got me started on the road before leaving it herself. She now eats what I jokingly call the liver longer diet: the occasional flesh dish but lots of veggies. Sadly, she moved away from whole grains, too.
We are vegetarian (me, and my 3 children. Husband eats meat about once a week) Im an "almost" vegan but I want to get the butter used up. We bought a ton at Costco. When that is gone I will be completely vegan.
Just me & my sis, she's veggie, I'm vegan. I'm working on the hubby, he loves these vegan chilli burgers I found and as I cook all our meals he hasn't much choice!
My folks just went vegetarian this year. I am so proud of them. My dad was quite the meat and dairy guy, also, so it was a big step.
my sis was a vegetarian for a few years before I became one....we both still are, with some support from the family....altho, shes away at university so I am the only one in this house....which is incredibly annoying
My parents eat maybe one meal with fish or chicken in it a week. Most of the time they eat beans, tempeh and tofu for protein. They made Jay the family dog go vegetarian on homemade doggie food, mostly because his body can't digest meat at all. They were fully supportive when I made the choice never to eat meat again. They admit now that they thought I wasn't going to be serious about it (hey, I was a very serious 9 year old). Now I'm vegan, with the exception of when I dine with my grandma (it took her about 9 years to understand vegetarianism, she'll be dead by the time she understands veganism). So if she takes me out to a restaurant that has vegan stuff on the menu, then obviously I'll order that. Most times I'm not that lucky... However my influence is rubbing off on her, as she suggested we go to a local vegetarian restaurant.
Unfortunately my dad would eat steak and lobster 3x a day if my mom would let him. I am vegan. I have a vegan cousin, and my boyfriend (whom I live with) and our dog and rats are vegetarian. My mother is not vegetarian but is very supportive of me and eats a lot of vegetarian food and is very great at holidays about making sure the things she cooks are suitable for me. my dad will probably never be vegetarian (which is sad because his cholesterol AND blood pressure are high AND heart disease runs in our family and I want to keep him around). I think my mom would be vegetarian if she didnt have to cook meals for my dad. I am always supportive of them and told my dad (even jokingly because I know he won't) that he can ask any questions about vegetarianism that he wants. My mom doesn't eat veal or wear fur or anything and has a kind heart. I hope one day she will go veg.
My cousin used to be vegetarian, but no one else. My parents and sis are pretty supportive of me, but the most supportive person is my grandma. She makes sure that when I visit her house, EVERY meal she cooks has vegetarian stuff in it (like spaghetti, good veggies, and optional meatballs in a seperate dish). Even Thanksgiving has un-turkyified stuffing and other good food. She's a great lady. ~Nova
my dad was vege when he was nineteen or something for a year or so till his doctor at the time recommended him off it for something or other...I presume thst these days that wouldn't happen but maybe not! my brother is vegetarian due to being a hare krishna...as his committment and discovery of his theosophical self has changed so has his eating habits however the last few years he has been veg as far as I know. I used to get really annoyed at my auntie who used to swear that I would die from being vege being that she was a home ec teacher and therefore knew everything there was to know about nutritionand try to sneak meat past me in meals....they don't do it now but let it be said I still to this day don't get much to eat apart from lettuce if I do eat with them! (a very very rare occurance these days!) my godparents were strict vegetarians, Liberal Catholics, and we had friends who ate similar sorts of meals that were strict seventh day adventists.(they are connected in my head through the meals they shared with me even though they didn't know each other) I think those around you have a lot to do with you becoming and staying veg and I think most important person of all would have had to be my mother who very kindly cooked a lot of vegetarian meals when we were growing up and if it wasn't always made sure I had something good to eat! thanks mum! stephanie
