Just because it gets brought up in lots of argument threads, I got curious...Who here has read the entire Bible (Christians, Pagans, Atheists, Agnostics, anyone). I will admit I haven't. I have read the entire NT though, and am doing the daily readings to make it through the OT by the end of the year... So, have you?
Short? I beg to differ, man. It's long. Long and boring, lots of geneology and preachiness. Anyways, I voted "no, and not a christian." Though, I USED to be a christian, which is when most of my bible-reading got done.
I'm a couple days from being finished Judges, and I do have to agree that for the most part, the books of Moses are quite dull. Especially cause most of it deals with, as you point out, long geneologies, taking censuses, and the writing of the Laws (which really has almost no value to a modern Chrisitan, but reading it, I can really see how important it must have been in the historical context as it set out why things were the way they were)
Not only have I read the entire bible many times over, but I have had to memorize large sections and chapters for bible class when I was in school.
I really didn't think it was all that boring.. The genealogies are important, got to know who's who. I guess I'm just easily entertained.
I've tried, but the major feminist in me gets ticked off at the Old Testament so I've never gotten very far.
Ive read a good bit of it, I have read almost all of it except most of the old testament. But I have read Genesis most of Exodus and Daniel. Thats about it in the old testament tho... And then about all of the New Testament. And this was done when I considered myself a christian around 4-5 years ago. So I was young...
Huh? Was that to me... because reading the Bible does not make a person a Christian. But anyway... Please read the original post: Originally Posted by TrippinBTM why have only 4 christians responded to the poll? Kinda interesting that most of us readers are not christian. Why do you think that is? I have a theory (Just my opinion) that it is because most people who identify themselves as christians rely on others ie, pastors, teachers, lecturers, to tell them what the bible says and means. I myself never bothered to read the whole thing until I gave up christianity. Of course being raised catholic, it was never really stressed to read the actual book, we just belived whatever the priest told us.
Also I think the members of the site have to be taken into consideration. I would venture that the percentage of Christians on the entire site isn't as high as in the United States. People might just have seen the thread title on the main page clicked on it and felt compelled to vote. I don't know how many Christianity Forum/Philosphy+Religion Forum "regulars" voted compared to others. That would be another factor. Yeah, I wouldn't be suprised if some Christians didn't want to admit that they hadn't read the entire thing (but I tried to help with that by making it a private poll). Thats why one day I want to take survey's outside of churches and find out how regular their attendance is and compare it to how much of the bible they have read....one day....one day...
Read it through about a half dozen times. Still reading it - there is much of interest in the levels below the surface.
