I like the feeling of being barefoot. it symbolize the peace, carefreeness, and natural lifestyle. as you can see the paintings of classical art and Indians feature bare feet a lot. I strongly oppose the rule of "No shirt, No shoes, No survice."

Yeah that NS3 rule has no practical purpose other than to further people's own personal prejudices against barefoot and shirtless people. These people who have this disgust towards barefoot and shirtless people should deal with this issue on their own time and not bring it into their business and allow it to interfere with how they interact with their customers.

According to historical context, shoes were strongly linked to war in ancient times. As you can see in the painting of the Romans, people rarely go barefoot, in contrast to Greeks. Why? Because Romans were fierce fighters who conquered Europe except Russia and Germany, in all the Roman art works we can see the soldiers wearing boots and were readdy to kill. Peaceful nations reject shoes!

Macedonians were basically Greeks. Same culture anyways, at least back then (I don't know about now).

As far as shoes in war, I wonder if people went barefoot most of the time but in war you would wear sandals/shoes (for the long marches and for kicking). Hard to say. Besides, sandals were pretty common even back then.

There are plenty of cultures that went to war in bare feet, though. Hell, in some Greek units, they went to war nude! Bare feet are our natural condition, not an indication of a peaceful nature. For every example you might find of a culture or individual who was peaceful and barefooted, you can also find examples where bare feet are seen on brutal and vicious people. Changing one's footwear doesn't change one's nature.

But yeah, sandals didn't provide much armored protection. I would imagine that they arose from the influx of roads during the Roman Empire's reign, as well as the fact that the Roman Empire itseld spread itself across much of the world - lots of traveling soldiers means lots of sore feet! Sandals might not provide much relief from fatigue, but even a little bit of support could mean a tremendous difference in a major engagement. Also foot injuries would be more prevalent with 50,000 troops all marching forward, each soldier unable to see very far in front of himself. Mobility is everything in war, and if you're lagging behind because your troops are foot-sore and injured, then you've got a problem.

The common Roman soldier wore sandles, not boots.

Yeah me too.. Its weird how just taking off your shoes can make you more comfortable, not just physically.

Actually I just find it plain relaxing! Not only does it make me feel more "down to earth", but a nice little bare foot stroll is a real stress-buster too. ;)

I have been a barefooter for 5 years. Yes, I get the "looks" but it is who I am. I feel so comfortable. The no shirt, no shoes, and no service are establishment rules not laws.
Love being comfortable in your barefeet.[IMG]

Man has already disrupted the natural rhythm by laying down concrete and littering everywhere to the point that one must be cautious going barefoot in a city. In a natural place going barefoot is fantastic. I get nervous walking around people's lawns who probably have broken glass bottles lying about. For a lot of man-made problems it seems like we need man-made solutions. I don't want tetanis (sp?) or a giant gash in my foot.

    Go natural in nature.

I love walking around barefoot in the grass or in earth. I just don't feel right walking barefoot on anything man made. I think most people here would agree with me. I have discovered the joy of sandles in the warm months here in the north east USA. I will be sad when I have to wear shoes again.

I enjoy going barefoot also. I most enjoy feeling the earth and being all natural. Doctors have found that people that live barefoot have healthier stronger feet with fewer foot injuries. Take a look at the barefoot society website.

BungalowBrad pointed out that most man-made problems require man-made solutions, its unfortunate, but true. It's a domino effect. One mistake leads to another in this industrial world.

I feel exactly the same way -- what is it about bare feet that is so humbling and freeing? It makes me feel more connected to everything, too.
