anyone eles into him? Dlyan covered him alot and said "he was one of the best song writers to walk the face of the earth" and i agree... I have yet to see the documentry but I heard it was great!
Townes was the first out of the usual suspects songwriter I really resonated with. I got to hear someone do White Freightliner last weekend & it remined me of how eternal yet still immediate his songs are. I also got to see John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), so I was one spoiled puppy that night!
It's playin soon on the documentry channel, I'll definatly check it out, really curious to see what he's all about I've heard the praise from other artists before, but never heard the man himself
Quite a few other artists have covered Townes, including some of my favorites: Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Jay Farrar, Cowboy Junkies, just to name a few. Great music, nice and emotionally raw. There was a tribute to Townes that ran on Austin City Limits a few years ago that was just incredible. What's the name of the documentary? Anybody know if it's on DVD?
cheers supermodmama. this thread's fine, except his name's spelled with an 'e'. What can I add.. finding TVZ's originals on vinyl hasn't been easy. I guess yard sales in Texas & the southwest might be more fruitful but I'm up in Canada. I won't pay ebay pries for vinyl, anymore. Too many mouths to feed at casa sarchi. A reco, if you have two hours to kill, the 'Remembering TVZ' radio broadcast is excellent. find it on this page.
To change thread titles I have to move 'em a couple times. Eventually it will bug me on an irritated day.
I received the new DVD "Be Here To Love Me", I've watched it and would highly recommend it. Those who have the Amsterdam gig on VHS may be a bit annoyed by some repitition, but this film is a 100 minute biography/documentary and is quite well made. There are interviews with Emmylou, Willie, Kris K., Steve Earle, Guy Clark and others, as well as many Townes interviews, and interviews with all three of his wives (separately) and his three kids (also separately). Anyway, for a hardcore fan this will be a must... for casual fans, I'd recommend it. Buy it from Jeanene (townesvanzandt.com) and she throws in a free cassette - Rear View Mirror is outstanding. An aside, I thought the film was also instructive to anyone with alcoholism or other addictions in their family; basically all of us, right? More here: http://www.townesthemovie.com/home.html
