Hey you guys,,, Watch out for some of the pancake mixes,,,some well actually most of em have chicken fat,, I dunno why but they do, chevy
I have never seen a mix with chicken fat. Maybe that would be more common in biscuits. More common non-vegan culprits in pancakes include eggs and/or milk.
I really don't think it's true that "most" pancake mixes have chicken fat in them. That's not to say that there aren't those that do, but I've read the ingredients of several pancake mixes and not once have I found that listed as an ingredient. I just make my own.
I second that. Sometimes I make my own, and when I do, the pancake mix is always vegan -- I've never seen it non-vegan (unless it had eggs and/or milk in it -- in which case, it's not much of a "mix" really).
Store brands might have lard (I think Jiffy did for years), but again, there's not much of a reason to have fat in a mix that calls for milk on it's packaging. Buttermilk solids are often there. Another odd critter source is the store brand cake mixes in the Affiliated system. Beef fat in particular.
I make my own pancake and waffle mixes too. That way I can add a lot of healthy extras, and do without the unnecesarries.
Ditto! ~ I make my own with WW(organic) flour and ground flax seed and then I also add sunflower seeds. Im so good at making this because I do it every morning! You would think my kiddos would get sick of it but they ask for it every morning!! lol ~
That is sooo disgustingly disturbing! One time I got a small apple pie from work and was eating it while I read the ingrediants ... Turns out it had 'beef tallow' in it. I'm assuming it's just beef fat, but still - GROSS! I don't see why those animal products need to be put in food like that. I'm sure it dosen't make the food taste THAT much better. ... makes no sence at all.
My MIL just bought me a big ol' bag of whole flaxseeds. I wanted to grind them to add into things like my pancakes, waffles, muffins, breads, but my question is, if I want to grind a batch of the seeds, how long will it keep in the fridge, or should only small amounts be ground up at a time? I don't want them going rancid or anything! And do you grind your sunflower seeds, or just add them in as is? My kids love sunflower seeds as a snack, but I've never added them in things like that. I'd like to experiment and try though!
Well I buy the already ground flax and I just keep it in the fridge (which it says to do) I also add the sunflower seeds whole. I also will sometimes add things like pumpkin, banana, apple sauce , zucchini ect. Its so easy to get creative and sneak in veggies and what not into them. I also will pack them in my older daughters lunch for school
To be honest I don't get why people buy pancake mix to start with, they are not exactly hard to make.
One thing that a LOT of brands put animal fat in: hash browns. Lots of them have beef tallow (fat). Seems easy enough to keep that crap out of there but apparently not. I hate when companies do a big blanket ingredient list with "may contain" "canola oil and/or beef tallow" You don't know what you are putting in the stuff you are making? Jeese.
"whichever is cheaper"... I have a hard time believing chicken fat is cheaper than vegetable oil, that is what's baffling me with this. I don't get it either. I make my own w/ spelt four, brown sugar, vanilla, soy milk and yes, eggs and butter so not vegan but still vegetarian.
People use packaged simply to cut time. I believe the Aunt Jemima whole wheat mix is vegan but it is pretty simple to make yourself. Some people just are not great at cooking. We all have different things we are good at. I love cooking and sometimes I will still get a packaged mix.
