Uttering talaq in sleep lands couple in soup A Muslim couple in Jalpaiguri district have been ordered by local religious leaders to separate as the husband allegedly uttered talaq three times in his sleep. While the couple, who have three children, refused to obey the order since there was no discord between them, the community leaders are adamant that they must separate or face a "social boycott". Aftab Ansari and Sohela have been married for the past 11 years. However, on the night of December 20 last year, Aftab allegedly uttered talaq three times in his sleep after a tiff with his wife. The matter came to light when Sohela discussed it with her close friends and soon it reached the ears of the Muslim leaders. The leaders, quoting the Shariyat, ruled that the talaq has to be implemented and if it is not acceptable, the only alternative was temporary separation for 100 days during which the wife will live at her father's house and spend a night with another man. She can remarry her husband only after the man has given her talaq. As the couple was unwilling to accept the verdict, the matter went to the family counselling centre at Falakata police station in Jalpaiguri district. The counselling centre, attended by judges of the Alipurduar sub-divisional court, discussed the problem in detail on Saturday, but failed to find a solution. The additional district session judge (second track), Muhammad Abdul Jalil, has directed the general secretary of the Anjuman Committee, Muhammad Abul, to settle the issue, sources in the counselling centre said. I am running out of patience for fools.....
Welcome to planet earth! With its 'intelligent' life. However, there are just as many Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Toaist, and materialist fools as Muslims. It applies across the board to all humans.
Had it not been for the verse; " And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: "To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we seek not the ignorant."[Koran 28.55] I would of answered this post lenghty... are you seriously judging 1.2 billion people by the view of a few people? May Allah guide you
Hare Krishna! The story is from the state of West Bengal where I belong. A good part of my life was spent in Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri districts. The memories are all fragrant covering one or two forgotten bad ones. Still I remember my good friends Zaffar and Kaiyum. There are so many good things to talk about my muslim friends and their families whom I knew then and know now. Unfortunately brother h-a-h finds only the bad things and is interested in projecting all the bad things with a few of all the communities and tries to generalise. Ignorance is not only with the subjects of all his stories but with him as well. Dear Cabdirajjaq you are right there to pray for Him that 'Allah' should give him the good senses. Love, Kumar.
It's sad that people tend to judge Islam on the basis of biased reports on the TV and so on. If they spent some time with Muslim people and got to know them they might change their attitudes.
I agree. The just did Islam awareness week here and the biggest thing they did was a video on misconceptions (very similar to the one the Hindu Students Council made in poster form) and from my friend Ayesha I hear it went well and through interaction people began to understand instead of judge. Also, we met a girl the other day who started a magazine for Muslim girls and is now following Sufism and she was such an inspiration to us
I am very interested in some branches of Sufism, esp. Persian and central Asian schools. It is possible that the ancient wisdom of Persia and India have a common root. I've also met some Sufis or Dervishes in Morocco, and they are very nice people indeed, about as far from the caricatures created in the west as you can get. I'd also like to mention Qawali music as performed in Pakistan and northern India, and exemplified by the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This is basically Sufi music, but it is my understanding that it is popular too with Hindus, and members of all religions are welcomed. It seems to have a capacity to cut across surface differences and divisions.
I have a friend who gave me a few songs by him...they are indeed very wonderful. This girl was associated with a branch of Sufism that was very Islam centric...she said it was a little less ritual based than she found Islam was...but still included them...just focusing on mysticism as well as Divine law...
There are many different orders of Sufis and Dervishes, and although they all accept Islam, the beliefs and practices vary quite a lot. The Sufis of Persia or Iran are different from those of Arabia or Turkey or North Africa. It appears that in all these places there were traditions of 'initiates' in pre-Islamic times, and these were adapted to the new Islamic order. So in Morocco for instance, there can be found what are very clearly remnants of a pagan cult of the god Pan. In Persia, a certain amount of the wisdom of the Zoroastrian Magi passed to their Dervish descendants and so on. Some Sufis also say, in a way similar to Christian Gnostics, that the Prophet had an inner circle to whom he gave special teachings. But I'm sure one can learn from Sufi teachings without the need to convert to Islam! There are actually many similarities with Yoga teachings, although there are differences too, as well as with teachings of mystics from other cultures. Glad to hear you like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan..
I will give Islam this: Their fundamentalists are superior to the Hindu ones. The Shiv Sena: Theyre so stupid. They killed one of the greatest Hindu leaders of the modern era. The Muslims didnt have to do squat. atleast they have smart fundamentalists.
Hindu fanatics accused gandhi of muslim appeasement He did go to enormous lengths to see to it that India stood firm on its promises made to pakistan One incident that comes to my mind is at the time of partition India had promised Pakistan a percentage of the finances after the partition when war broke out over kashmir,India decided to go back on the promise and wihthold the money (because it will be used to finance the war pretty much what the EU,USA is doing to Hamas government as of today) At this time gandhi decided it was unfair and held a fast and much drama ensued and the funds were finally released.. This did not go down well with Hindu radical with links to the extremist Hindu Mahasabha , who held Gandhi responsible for weakening India by insisting upon a payment to Pakistan Later on one of their cadres carried out the assasination of gandhi
Many of you are just trying to be politically correct I am not branding all muslims as stupid neither am I saying Hindus are in any way superior We must not forget what one of India's greatest thinkers Sri Aurobindo had to say on the nature of Islam full quote " You can live with a religion whose principle is toleration. But how is it possible to live with a religion whose principle is 'I will not tolerate you'? How are you going to have unity with these people?... I am sorry they [Gandhi and Nehru] are making a fetish of Hindu-Muslim unity. It is no use ignoring facts; some day the Hindus will have to fight Muslims and they must prepare for it. Hindu-Muslim unity should not mean the subjection of Hindus. Each time the mildness of the Hindus has given way. The best solution would be to allow the Hindus to organise themselves and Hindu-Muslim unity will take care of itself, it will automatically solve the problem. ...I see no reason why the greatness of India's past or its spirituality should be thrown into the waste basket, in order to conciliate the Muslims who would not be conciliated by such policy. " Sri Aurobindo was bang on target.....
HH my question was a rhetorical one - I know well the circumstances of Ghandi's assasination. I was trying to counter the claim that fundamentalism doesn't exist. In my view, the people who shot Ghandi were fundamentalists. In the case of Sri A's comments on Islam, this is one instance where I disagree. It would be an absurdity for Hindus and Muslims to slog it out in yet another war. No ideology or philosophy or religious belief can justify it. It would be totally contrary to any kind of evolutionary direction.
when I say Muslim fundamentalists are smarter I mean they are craftier and more resourceful. They get the job done. They accomplish their goals. ofcourse killing innocents is not smart. duh!
Actually it doesn't seem like they have a hope in hell of achieving their goal, which I assume to be a 'universal Caliphate'.
