My husband had always had ADD real bad, but he refuses to use medication. He self medicates by smoking out every couple hours. Thus his long time pot smoking habits will continue..but my two year old seems to have his same type of characteristics and short term attention span. I realize he is only a two year old and they are all probably crazy at this age, but is is possible he did "inherit" my hubbys ADD?? At what age do the symptoms occur? Anyone else have similar problems? I know I should ask a doctor, but I really don't want him on any meds. Since he is a toddler! How should I deal with it? It's physically and emotionally exhausting me..:*Thanks

    Yes, it's quite possible.

Then again, I think it's somewhat early to be making a diagnosis. I have almost 3 year old twins, and they have an unlimited supply of energy, can't sit still for even a second, very short attention spans, and are constantly into things they shouldn't be, they go nonstop all day. I just chalk it up to normal toddler behavior because my oldest son, who is now 6 years old, did the same thing at their age, and now, he's calmed down and I have no worries about it.

Oh, I also have ADD myself. I was on meds for it briefly when I was younger, but haven't taken any for about 14 years.

I've heard of people having great success in taming ADD nutritionally and by removing toxins in the home :)

ADD and ADHD, in particular, are often confused with SID or sensory defensiveness. The biggest difference between them is that with SID/SD, the person can sometimes focus on certain things for long periods of time, and with ADD/ADHD they can never focus on anything for very long. Removing toxins and allergens from your environment and diet would be a great thing to do for both your son and your husband, either way.

the toxin mostly associated with add is phosphorus, it is part (in different quantities) in almost all factory made food.

my mother has an adhd boy on her hands. my husband was the same. neither have ever been medicated and are doing very well. diet, exercise, and a great deal of patience helped both of them, without getting them hooked on drugs before they've even had a chance to try. i know there are extreme cases, and on occaision drugs are warranted, but to be honest, i think we're drug happy. we dope our kids to make our own lives easier because we've gotten lazy.

and don't worry, i think just about all little boys are physcially and mentally and emotionally exhausting. used to be we could lean on the other females of the tribe, now we're supposed to do it all by ourselves. don't let that happen to you. get help with watching your children.

you know, i think any of us who've had experience with the high flying kids have felt tempted at one point in time or another.

Our major diet changes were me grasping at straws trying to avoid medicating my children at all costs... luckily for us, it worked. It was really scary contemplating cutting wheat out of our diet (wheat in particular, which led to the realization that we cannot eat gluten of any sort) but now it's not such a big deal anymore. Even the mildest food allergy can create huge behavioral problems in some children.

my brother was the same. so many of the things i had to cut out for my migraines and fugues were things that helped my brother "settle down." my mother also got him into junior lifegaurding at the beach, as well as body surfing, and some tae kwon do. all excellent things for him to do BEFORE he does his homework. works like a charm.
