I hate having to change the way I dress for the workplace. I'm not particularly rebellious or unusual in my casual clothes, but they are just that ... casual. I prefer to wear lycra tops with interesting patterns (or plain but in bright colours) teamed with baggy cargo pants or flared jeans, and finished off with clumpy platform boots or shoes. I also have a nose stud, though these days it's a tiny one. I'd like a ring but it's very impractical.

For 14 years I worked for a city law firm and I had to wear suits or at least formal clothing. I used to wear trouser suits which I found to be a comfortable compromise. I would have bright colours though, my favourite was a very loud purple, but hey, it's a business suit, so I was toeing the line! My nose stud remained though, because I said to my boss that it was too painful to remove and the more times I removed and replaced it, the more chances of getting an infection and it would have been their fault for forcing me to remove it. So it remained!

I am so lucky in my workplace now. I have bright red and purple streaks in my hair, which is long (I do tie it back for practicality though), and I mainly wear hoodies and baggy cords to work, yes with my platform boots too. Still working for lawyers, but they are really cool, and my bosses like sci-fi and fantasy, so as well as the laxed dress code, I can have cool non-work chats as well.

Seriously though ... like the others have said, you can find little ways to retain your personal style and expressiveness, and like the socks, even if they're hidden, you know you're wearing them and that alone will make you feel more "yourself".

Good luck with the job anyway.
