So tell me about Salt Spring, and the vicinity.

Am I twenty years too late?

I hear it's a cool place to live, a haven for homeschoolers, etc. Never been out there, what I find online suggests the place is becoming "gentrified", i.e. pricey. So are the hippies cashing out and the seniors taking over?

The other islands are cooler, in my opinion anyways.
    Like Galliano.

Although Saltspring does have the perk of having easier and more frequent boat access from Swartz Bay.

The vibe on Saltspring is still quite liberal and "hip", but a lot of people from the mainland and Victoria have purchase land for "cottages." When I say cottages, I mean mansions, not shacks. They bring SUV culture with them. Of course, not everyone is like this, but it is prevalent.

I spent a couple of days on saltspring last year when I was out west, EVERYONE I met was super nice, laid back and chatty even more so then the folks on Vancouver Island. Comming off the ferry I had to hitchike into town and I was really surprised when an old couple pulled over and offered a ride, they weren't overtly liberal or anything, just nice, run of the mill, Island folk, a great first impression for my stay there. The park in ganges always had a few hardcore hippies hangin around, so there was always this informal gathering and offerring of food going on (some of which came from dumpster diving, a first for me). I noticed the presence of commercialisation/americanisation, but it's just about everywhere now anyways, and it seemed to me like it was two realites existing side by side. So I don't think that takes away from the experience, not when there's folks like that. I have nothing to compare the experience to, I'm sure it was more 'groovy' 20 years ago, but I still say it's an experience that shouldn't be missed.

i find ppl on the bigger islands are probably more laid back then on the smaller

i've been to savary island many times which is further up the coast, and the ppl there have a "holyer then though" attitude towards guests to the island, they are even trying to ban camping on the beach

Lots of the islands have banned camping on the beaches. My brother and his buddies went to an island more north and "some little gnome dude on a 4x4" told them to "get off the German prince's fishing land".

Yeah the islands are still fun but as with everwhere folks are still learning how to share and what not...we had a protest/camp/squat on the high tide line on Saltspring for two years...till some locals said that they were gonna start running people over and killing them...then folks started squatting out on a mountain...till some locals came and burnt it too the ground...so I hear (I haven't been on SS in about ten months)...actually the rich folks weren't the problem that year it was this old family land folks...rough territorial farm types they were indeed...but yeah...respect is given for respect as always...I've never had a problem...but I can be a quite the clever fox indeed...Saltspring is great I'll be back there soon I'm sure...the island itself vibrates with a magic all it's own...Hornby Island is a wonderful place too...love that nude beach 'Little Trib'... supposedly one of the warmest ocean spots in Canada...YAY!
