what do you guys know about this drinkable medication that, if taken in the first 53 days or something of pregnancy, is an effective method of abortion? i came across it on plan parenthood and wondered..
I think pennyroyal tea is an herbal abortive. It is also toxic in large amounts, so this is not recommended to use for the safety of the mother. If you want to, google pennyroyal herb. Kurt Cobain sang about it in the song bearing the same name on In Utero Peace and love
Pennyroyal tea... *shudders* My friend drank that when she was 14 (she and her boyfriend both freaked and thought that was their only option) and had a miscarriage. She's been pregnant 2 or three times since then and miscarried every one, not to mention the cysts and trouble she's had with her ovaries since then. My advice is to never ever ever do that. Way too dangerous.
i know about cotton root extract and blue cohash, although some people react badly to the cohash. cotton root is quite safe - in fact, it's touted as the safest method around.
"not only will it help you cure your hangover... but it'll also help fix the mistake you made last night"
If you are going to self prescribe this or other medicines (herbal or traditional Western), you should do so under the direction of someone with experience and training who knows what they are doing. A book and the internet can not give you the knowlege and experience needed.
i was just sharing personal experience with herbal preparations for bringing on menstruation. the substances are used as emmenagogues, not abortifacents, and i was suggesting places to find information, not self-diagnosis or -medication. sorry if my post came across as a list of prescriptions; it was not intended to. in my studies of pregnancy and birth, i have become interested in herbal contraception and thought this was a relevant thread.
One must be VERY careful with Pennyroyal. It has a low toxicity point, (meaning the "threaputic dose" and a toxic dose can be very close.) IMO, as a HCP (Health Care Provider,) Susun Weed provides NO usable data for my practice, as she has no evidence based information. Unfortunately, her stuff is almost all anecdotal, which in my line of work isn't usable for treatment purposes, AND her data about lactation is really outdated. As Lactation Consultants, we have been warned NOT to use her book, as we are bound by ethics to use Evidence Based Data reaguarding medicines, and certain treatment methods, to help our clients. Also, Weed became Prolife recently and her newer edition of the book tell you this (I have both the old and new editions, and the new one provides no info on abortions or bringing on periods, along with her explaination that she thought giving emmenagauge info was wrong. I don't quite understand her at all.) IMO, if you are within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, Plan B birth control is your best bet. At least 2-3 womyn a year in Britain die from Pennyroyal poisoning. I don't know the numbers in the USA. The only thing I have Pennyroyal for is to de-flea my dogs. And, I have to be careful with this, as it can cause vomiting in the dog, if not dosed properly. Even though I only use it topically, I wouldn't give this to my dog orally. And too much of the essensial oil can cause kidney failure, even topically. I usually use the dried herb, occasionally pumping it up with a small amount of the oil. ONLY for the dog's fleas.
theres a very good zine called 'hot pants: do it yourself gynecology' i belive you can find it online if you google. its got lots of good, safe info. please dont fuck around with herbs if you dont know what youre doing! be safe. <3
I was doing research on this for a while. The problem is they don't know how safe it is yet. Basically what the medication does, is induces an abortion much like a miscarriage. The problem with it is, if not all the fetus and dead material passes through properly it can actually sit inside and infect YOU. A few people have actually died after consuming the abortion inducing medicine, because of the infections it can cause. If you're worried you might be pregnant, go to a doctor. Or go to Planned Parenthood and talk to them about your options. I don't encourage anyone to get an abortion.... but if you must, from what I researched AND heard from friends who have had abortions, the surgical method is actually LESS painful, and it's safer. Please be smart, and talk to a professional.
And I agree with Maggie Sugar, if you have just had unprotected sex within a few days, Plan B, day after pill is the best route to take. It's MUCH safer, and is very affective. I had to do Plan B once, and well, I didn't get pregnant so I suspect it works. Nor did I have any side affects, or get sick, or anything to the effect. Plan B CAN work after 72 hours as well EXCEPT it's not anywhere near as effective then.... so, get in there ASAP if that is what happened. Planned Parenthood should offer the day after.
Amen A&O. One of the best pieces of advice I've seen on this forum! Herbs ARE medicine, although they may do more, or less than a book you simply read tells you they will.
