    de·moc·ra·cy
    n. pl. de·moc·ra·cies

    1. Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
    2. A political or social unit that has such a government.
    3. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.
    4. Majority rule.
    5. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.
    The U.S. isn't a Democracy by definition.

No, it's a democratic republic, or a republican democracy if you will.
Democracy really just means that the people vote... it wouldn't be a good idea to let everyone vote on every issue that came around (logistics would be a bitch, and most people don't spend enough time to really be educated about the issues, rather just form knee-jerk reactions)
And Republicanism really just means that you have a legislative body that forms the rules, instead of a king, or a triumverate (if you wanna go roman :) )
Now, some will argue that we have an oligarchy, the control of the state by a few wealthy individuals, and while everyone is allowed to have an opinion, i t'ink that most of the time it's pretty suspect (they can't even agree within themselves who the oligarchs are...)

A democratic political system without a democratic economic system is not functional because people with higher wealth can just buy, influence, and rig elections.

  5. Its still a democracy, just a really poor one.

Interesting you should bring the point up. America is a classic for pointing the finger at nations who "don't share american values". If anything, many amricans in power are guilty as hell and under a democracy should be removed.

  6. ....or what they "think" they want

  7. Are you saying americans think? [IMG]

The fact that a leader can have a 34% approval rating and not be out proves it's not a democracy. People have been majorly fooled in their belief of what a democracy is. I can tell you it's not about waiting till a correct time and choosing one of two people. It's about the people deciding, by any means necessary, who respresents them. In a true democracy, as soon as a leader doesn't have majority approval, he's out. If the people care enough to do anything about it.
