society and its perceptions, or the law? legally, nope... we're equals, that's cool society, well... it has a lot of stereotyped, negative views and expectations of both genders that are just ridiculous so personally nope, I just don't like a lot of the stereotypes that both genders have to deal with
How did it go too far? Are we talking reproductive rights? Or are you just mad that we are no longer considered "radical" if we aren't pregnant and baking a cake? People are people and should have the same rights.
it is unequal: in school if a male student beat a female student he would be in big trouble and people all hate him; however, if a female student beat up a male student, it's "just defense" and condoned. Most sexual harassment suits were made by women sueing men. women can harass men too, but men can't sue women b/c people would think it as ridiculous for a women to harass or abuse men, stereotypes.
that's not always the case. Men CAN sue women for it. That's ridiculous. See my thread on women being sexual predators in the Women's Issues. The general consensus BY the women is that women and men should be held accountable for their actions.
You cite this as an example of womans rights going too far. Are you suggesting that before the creation of NOW that inter-gender violence was treated equaly? "if a male student beat a female student he would be in big trouble and people all hate him" True then, true now. Actualy, then the boy would get the crap beaten out of him by the girl's brother and authority would do nothing to the brother. "if a female student beat up a male student, it's "just defense" and condoned." I don't know about now, but it just didn't happen when I was in school. Boys were taught that you never hit girls, even in self-defence. "Most sexual harassment suits were made by women sueing men. women can harass men too, but men can't sue women b/c people would think it as ridiculous for a women to harass or abuse men, stereotypes" Before NOW and sexual harrassment laws, "sleep with me or you are fired" was legal and there was no recouse. "A for a lay" was legal, the school might disipline the teacher, but usualy turned a blind eye. Are you blamming the womens movement for men's unwillingness to sue when they are wronged? There has been a change in attitudes about women hitting men. The shame and embarassment for the man is LESS than it used to be. Societies sterotypes restrict both men and women. Those stereotypes can not be attributed to the women's movement. NOW and other womens groups are fighting against those stereotypes.
the sexual harassment laws should be repealed immediately. I'm a libertarian, i think men and women are equal, BUT KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF IT. government should NOT protect women's rights using laws and decrees, rather by keeping the hand out of gender things and let men and women decide their own destiny. When the government intentionally make laws on gender equality, it screws up and made reverse discriminations. Also the right of self-defense should be universal, regardless of gender.
What recourse should a person have when the boss says "Sleep with me or you are fired"? If not by laws and decrees, how should government protect anyone's rights? In the eyes of the law, the right of self-defence is gender neutral. Society's attitudes are something else.
legally? not that i know of. I think the problems we have are because of society(double standards etc) and not a problem with the law. I cant think of a law that puts any gender at a disadvantage. I'm thinking the one that *might* be the exception and the one people will point to is toplessness for women. Are there any others that people know of?
On some issues, biology inequality makes it impossible to treat both sexes equaly without treating one sex unfairly. I think it is impossible for laws and employer policies relating to childbirth leave to be both fair and equal to both sexes. Abortion is another situation where the biological differences make equality and fairness incompatible. (Please no, I don't want to start another fruitless discussion about that issue.)
i guess you could consider the military unequal too... do we use females in the front lines of wars yet? fighting..not doing other stuff
Right, and the a few non-fighting women "soldiers" got high ranks than the men who are fighting. Grace Hopper never fought a battle, only did some computer jobs. yet she has the rank of Rear Admiral. If a man did same thing as she did probably he would be only a lieutenant.
In some states women don't have equal rights. Our society has still heavily accepted gender roles and until those are dissolved we can never be equal. The law is a reflection of society's opinions. I think gender issues are stupid and keep us devided when we should be uniting to fix the real problems in our world. Also, you'll notice that honors classes in highschools are mostly female. The system needs to be reworked.
mine weren't...well AP english was. Science and Math was overwhelming male. History was about even with males being a bit more. In what states do women not have equal rights?
Oh come on, are you saying that every man with high rank in the military has fought on the front lines? I don't even think you know what you are talking about...
No, why the hell do you assume I'm sexist? The middle and elementary schools need to change to bring guys up. Yes, the girls earned the grades. The current system works better for girls than for boys so I think it should be changed to benefit the boys but not affect the girls (don't make things worse for them). Also, the current system works better for extroverts than introverts, so teaching styles that work for both extroverts and introverts should be used instead of just styles that work for extroverts.
