Please visit this site. http://www.stopanimaltests.com/f-turkishHorses.asp?int=weekly_enews It has links (scroll down) where you can email to help stop the torture of horses in Turkey. What they are doing is cutting the throats of fully conscious horses, as to collect their blood for medical purposes. This can be done like they do with humans! With a needle. Not only is this barbaric, it is stupid and inefficient. A horse would supply a steady supply of blood w/o having to die if they would just use a different method. PLEASE VISIT THIS SITE. The links are right there, and email is free! Here it is again http://www.stopanimaltests.com/f-turkishHorses.asp?int=weekly_enews
that's not as bad as what they do to horses in the US to make hormone replacement drugs and birth control (Premarin, Prempro, etc). Why not start your fight a little closer to home? Scared of the big pharma companies and the billions of dollars they are making by torturing pregnant mares (not to mention what happens to the foals)? http://www.premarin.org/
I do not disagree wth you but I don't see why we can't do both. The link I provided has the email addresses of 3 people to contact. I know most people aren't going to send a letter so I thought this was the easiest thing for them to do.
i just saw the video today... i hate to see these things happen to animals, but honestly i think it's gonna be practically imposible to make it stop. it's not the horse's fault people need medicine
Did you read the site? It is perfectly probable that they can stop. They don't even have to use this method to obtain blood. They can do it like tehy do with humans (IV needles). PLEASE read the information before resigning yourself to not doing anything about it.
I just sent an e-mail to them all. To all that are concerned, I've recently read of the cruel practises performed on horses at the Refik Saydam Hygiene Center to collect blood for medical purposes and am extremely appalled at the lack of dignity you demonstrate in performing these commiserable acts. Though I am strictly against using animals in this way I understand that they may be a critical part in your medical practices. BUT, there is simply no reasoning behind the illogical methods of blood collection. This is simply a cruel irreversible procedure, that could be much more beneficial to everyone if you simply took the time to create a less hazardous mean of collection. Besides the apparent fact of animal cruelty, you must realise that the procedures used are economically unproductive. For crying out loud, the answer is quite simple and will benefit both parties involved. Simply use the same methods that is used in human blood donation on the horses. A needle can be comfortably inserted into the horses vein, which will then produce several liters of blood without killing, or even harming the animal. When employers of the Refik Saydam Hygiene Center violently slash the throats of innocent animals they are not only killing their poor souls but are putting themselves and others coming in contact with the blood at great health risk. The bacteria formed in these methods can infect many. Serum sickness could be just around the corner. All this can be prevented through the practise of using a simple cost effective sterile needle. But the economics behind it all does not spark any interest into my mind. These animals are left to die in frightening painful situations, where this could all be avoided. The animal protection laws in turkey are being violated in these outrageous acts. Lawsuits can be in the future of these cases if action is not taken. These acts are not only violating the Turkey’s Animal Protection Law, BUT are also in violation of European animal protection standards. Laws are made to be abided by, and any and all prosecutors will eventually face justice. Though you all make me want to scream in disgust at how our population can be so thoughtless; thinking their weak lives more meaningful then that of an animal I must remain calm in the simple hope that you all, the recipients of this plea of an e-mail think carefully of the situation. The cons far outweigh the pros's of this cruel practise. With the technological advances of today, your country should be proud enough to move with the era and update themselves. Replace these barbaric methods with the calming ways I have suggested; and in turn peace shall be apparent. Put your mind in the right place. Have that weight taken off your shoulders; do not let yourselves fall to sleep every night with the thoughts that YOU, all of you, are responsible for the bloodshed of millions of horses; you are responsible for the bacteria and contamination in these methods which will infect your fellow humans, you are ultimately responsible for death. A power which should only be intrusted to god. Sincerely, A concerned member of society.
I have helped to rescue a Premarin mare, and the baby she gave us unexpectedly! The things they do to these animals is amazing. This mare is very well-adjusted, compared to some I've seen, but she has a long way to go. Penny and her lovely surprise! Also, racehorses undergo horrid abuse on a regular basis -- not only are they forced to perform intense labor when their bones are still fragile, they are often run and run and run until they simply break down. Along the way they pass through some awful hands ... I have worked with rescued ex-racehorses who were very close to slaughter. ALL of them are perfectly wonderful animals ... but they all had tragic stories -- Lexus had been flipped over backwards (!) by an angry trainer, leaving him with a permanent 'bump' in his spine ... Justin had been run so hard so young that at age five he was nearly crippled ... Chase had been so severely beaten that for months he cowered in the back of the stall when a human being approached ... Molly had also been beaten, to the point that the trainer called the renderer to haul away what he thought was her corpse (!), but had also been confined to her stall for so long that she fell into a lathering, eye-rolling panic whenever we led her outside ... Iron had been left for long periods of time with no food or water, to the point that he no longer ate or drank normally -- he actually CONSERVED his resources in anticipation of having none later! These are true stories, and there are many more. To a lesser degree, show horses are put under similar pressure -- stalled to the point that their hooves contract and their nerves shatter ... physically modified (ie, tail-blocking) to the point that their bodies deform ... pushed to the mental breaking point with repetitive and/or unkind training routines ... subjected to "training" at the hands of unnatural devices (too-short tie-downs, draw reins, etc) ... not to mention the steroids and tranquilizers. Don't even get me started about overbreeding, either! I am passionate about horses ... as you can tell! Many equine athletes (the ones who compete on the level of the Olympic Games, but also a number of backyard hacks) love to help people ... but a number are broken and taken for granted. Wish I could help them all ... but for right now I'm starting small!
horses really are the most abused domestic animal. we use them and abuse them and throw them away like trash. a horses back is not a seat!!!! how would you like it if someone jumped on your back and put a harness around your face and manipulated your movements? it drives me crazy. i'd love to help in some way but i do not have the means to care for a horse.
Well my horse is just fine with it. He's happy spoiled thing. And guess what, your gonna gasp at this horrendous thing I do, ok.... one second, don't be too too startled at this.......I am soo horrible that yes *GASP* I use a whip on my horse. And to add to the horror, I have laugh after doing it. But yet... He basically behaves the best for me. He performs the best for me. He stands still and quiet for me when I need him to and doesn't push me around. Wow he comes to me, and nickers when I pass him --pretending to ignore him as a joke--. Wow he shows all this love for the person who "jumps on his back" and uses a whip on him... Come on people, if you know nothing of horse riding do not comment on it. First off it's called a bridle and not a harness, and no, the movements are not "manipulated" any good rider does not pull at the horses mouth and yank them into directions. It's about being one with the horse Also when it comes to upper level and olympic riding, if your horse doesn't love what it's doing, if it doesn't have the heart, you won't have an well performing athlete. Suncatch22, please don't generalize, it's like anything in life. Some groups all mistreated. You have wonderfully taken care of horses in racing; wonderfully taken care of show horses. Unfortunetly in everything in society their are groups being mistreated. And as I have said in another post... Is it natural to jump a dog around an agility course? To make a dog be in the show ring? Do we have a right to train dogs to do police work? Be theraputic dogs? Now shutup.
I definitely know from experience that you CANNOT make a 1500 pound animal do anything they don't want to. There were days when I had to cut my riding short because Dixie didn't want to act businesslike. She just wanted to play. People are acting like horses are 1 pound puppies that you can kick across the room into a burning firepit.
I am sickened by how nasty the pet threads have become to people whodon't agree. No one is saying we have to agree but this namecalling and nastiness should really stop. I have noticed more and more of it. Maybe it is a defense mechanism. I don't know. We can state our points w/o being awful. I think many people are rude online because they know that they will probbaly never meet the people they are insulting. I had to put someone on the ignore users list because I got called about 4 names in PM's for no reason. What happened to civil discussion!? No one has to be syrupy sweet but I feel this is out of hand. I guess that is what you get for arguing online anyway...none of us have anything to prove to anyone else on here. I originally came for the dradock forum and was glad to see a "Pets and Animals" with a subject line "Be Kind To Animals" underneath it. All it is is verbal assault.
Sorry if I sounded generalizing ... I DO know plenty of racehorses and showhorses and backyard horses alike who are very well-treated and spoiled. Mine is one of them -- he is a show-jumper and eventer who will hopefully be one of those Olympic level horses one day (although I doubt I have the fortitude to be an Olympic rider!) And YES, horses are very difficult to manipulate. I have walked on foot back to the barn many a time, often leading my temper-tantruming horse ... and more often following him, having been violently ejected from my "seat" on his back! But sometimes horses can be kicked around ... emotionally! I know that my 'baby' can have his feelings deeply hurt -- when I left for college, he sulked, and when I came home for break he refused to "talk" to me! I think that a lot of equine abuse is emotional, much as a lot of child abuse is. However, it does take a GREAT amount of abuse to wound a horse completely. Usually they get over it, just like little kids do. In many ways I think horses are like half-ton children. More children (human and equine alike) are well-treated than are abused, but those who are mistreated are heartbreaking, and the mistreatment inspires great anger in me. So forgive me if I sounded hotheaded ...
dont assume i know nothing about riding. i've ridden plenty and have been around the harness racing industry for a long time. it doenst take an animal expert to understand animals should be treated with the same respect we would want for ourselves and be allowed to make their own choice....that we should care for them first and consider their needs and wants before our own. ....*GASP*
Yeah, I apologise for contributing to that. Anyone who knows me from over the past four years, knows that I get very passionate and hot-headed. I've just been fed up with the whole "humans are a cancerous blight...blah blah blah...unless you are vegan, you are an abuser.." It grates on you. Some of us may be omnivorous but we do respect the animals we eat and we do do things to genuinely help. I am a very active animal welfare advocate. I do alot of volunteering and compaigning for ending animal abuse. If I see someone treating their dog like crap, I'm the first one to go yell at them. I just hate this ridiculous assumption that everything involving humans and non-human animals is abuse and murdering. My major beef is not with vegans(I honestly don't care what you eat or your lifestyle...it's your choice) or with people who love animals(as I love animals as well)..it's with PeTA. One of the things I despise about PeTA is their mantra(as expressed by Ingrid Newkirk, Mathew Fox...ect) that companion/domestic animals should be made extinct. I don't advocate the extinction of any species. Just because 10,000 years ago, some humans "created" cats, dogs, cattle, sheep, riding horse, ect..doesn't mean that we have the right to take away their right to continue on. It doesn't matter how any species came about, it isn't our right to end their existance. I find PeTA very arrogant to think that they have the authority to dictate what animals have the right to live and which ones don't. PeTA calls me an animal-hater/abuser because I eat meat...yet I'm not the one calling for mass extinction. It's also ironic that the majority of people working towards species conservation and protection...are infact people who partake in meat in their diet... and not PeTA members. It's ironic, I used to be a pamphlet-toting, paint-tossing, PeTA member, I donated hundreds of dollars over my teenage and early college years. I turned my back on PeTA when I learned that they were against(among many other reasons) veterinarian students using animal cadavers to learn about animal anatomy and how to perform life-saving surgery. You can't learn surgery without touching actual flesh. Staring at a computer screen does not give you the proper hands-on knowlege you must have. Human medical students practice on human cadavers so it's logical that vets practice on animal cadavers. I would never take my pets to a vet that never learned how perform proper incisions and catheterizing on an actual animal body before obtaining their liscense. I can't agree with much of their illogic. They are so hardcore that they lose credibility. Calling someone's dog an abomination while holding your hand out for a donation is not good business.
lets just be honest............. the way animal are treated is someting WE ALL have to think about..... in the past we saw animals as our servant/supplyer/dish.... but everything changes.... what was "normal" in the past aint normal now.... before it was normal w human slavery many places of the world... it was accepted generally (but not by all 4 sure) now we need to see that the animal issue is actuallly really something WE ALL NEED TO THINK ABOUT and try to improve.... don't you see?
I recently purchased a "rescued" Harness racehorse ,makes me so mad i cant see straight (at the "rescuers" ) they brought him home and turned him out in a large field and patted theirselves on the back and forgot about his needs , shots. wormers ,farrier, exercise and most importantly because horses are herd animals companionship.I see alot of these kinds of rescues . We got him to the house and after numerous visits by the farrier and a couple of trips to the vet and lots of excercise have pretty much have him back in shape and even started him under saddle ,everytime I walk by the tack room he perks up and come flying across the field wanting to go for a ride.
I have numbered my responses for easier reading. This isn't to be argumentative, it is just to address some things... 1. lots of people have , not just you or me or her or him. I do not know of anyone on this board or any vegans I have come in contact with that have said anything about "if you aren't vegan, you're an animal abuser" 2. Itis the reverse for me.i am disgusted at how many people view animals as expendible and worthless 3. I am glad you stick up for (some) animals. I do hope you understand how someone could see the duality of that though, eat one, love another. I am not judging you, i am just saying. I am glad you would stop abuse if you saw it 4.Vegan does not equal Peta. I am a member because I use their materials for peaceful demos. I certainly do not agree with that you are saying they advocate (killing companion animals?) 5.None of their letters contain information like this and they talk about copanion animals often. By letters i mean newsletters. I certainly do not agree with making companion animals extinct. I beieve in adopting from shelters and not breeding them. 6.I can't agree more! 7.you cannot deny that food animals are abused. But I do see your point with the hypocrisy. Actually I haven't met a vegetarian who DOESN'T have a non-human family member. I love my animals *very* much and do not agree with killing them. I have to say though that Peta doesn't ask its members to do anything bad to their animals. I would like to see where they say this. 8.Did you really throw paint!? I don't believe in doing it but I certainly dn't feel bad for someone who gets paint on ther fur coat
You have to forgive Elle, she's been brainwashed by PETA. I'm surprised she has domestic pets. That's kind of against the rules. Animals belong in the wild, and if they can't be returned to the wild their suffering should be ended. So it was recommended that I euthanized the 14 adult iguanas, 9 species of python, 6 species of gecko, the nile monitor and the bearded dragons I fostered when I worked in rescue. All of them had some human-caused affliction of one sort or another, be it metabolic bone disease or kidney dysfuntion, mouth rot, what have you. And like little robots, everyone from PETA said "put them down, they belong in the wild, they eat other animals, that's cruel, snakes are gross killers". Personally, I think the world would be better off without humans, and we should start by euthanizing PETA.
my rules have everything to do with what is in the best interest of the animals and nothing to do with PETA or any other organization. no one including me ever said anything about "putting down" domestic animals so get off it already. wtf
