I was asked to aid some friends of mine by providing them with sperm.
What are the mechanics of this, and what are considerations that I should be aware of?

    Thanks.

A search of Google for turkey baster insemination lead me to a page listing three common methods of At-Home Insemination, which explains the mechanics.

With methods where you don't exchange body fluids, like the turkey baster method, the donor is not at risk for an STD. However, you do have to worry about the responsibility of fatherhood and what that entails. The child should at sometime know who his/her father is, if just for medical reasons. The other implication is that if the mother ever applies for welfare the state will come after you for support payments. If, for what ever reason, the mother wants child support she has every right to get it from you and garnish your wages to make sure she gets payment. Even if you have never laid eyes on the child.

If this is a personal arrangement, you are at risk of this happening, even if you sign an agreement. I would check with a lawyer who has experience in this area.

Unless you plan to play a financial and emotional part in this child's life, I wouldn't do it. It could be a real bummer to pay for the upbringing of a child you didn't want and don't have the right to see.

hipunk, thanks for the info. I've been looking all over this internet, and have found some good info. thanks for the search terms. I also found www.knowndonor.com to be quite useful. it included a faq on the mechanics.
