They did it on mythbusters? I had the unfortunate experience of camping out with some friends in a lock in type thing (the fence to the land was locked) and no one brought matches. So I took the chocolate for smores and a beer can and did it. Dont remember where I learned it. No offence but the music thing may come off as a bit cliche... You'll need a gimmic. Who knew my marketing skills would come in handy to help people protest =P
Hmm... good point about it being cliche'. I will have to give it some thought. But I should probably also take it to a bigger town because there aren't a lot of people to do a lot of influencing with... Yeah, the Mythbusters thing was a good episode. I am not into things on TV like sitcoms and stuff like that, but the Discovery channel it pretty awesome.
Well just remember you need to hook them into paying attention to what your saying, like really listening. System of a down is a good band to take an example from. They structure their songs in a really musiclly unique fashion and incorperate statistics into them. Although at times they come off a little strong and kinda forced it loses some sincerity cause it just seems so extreme... like paranoid conspiracy nuts. But the first step is make people aware of the issue at hand. Do it on a street level.
I never actually went camping before or any place to actually experiment and learn these types of survival tactics. What books or online resoruces would yall recommend in reference to surviving out in the wild?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_jamming Pretty cool one. Sort if guerilla like tactics, eh? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die-in I don't know if this would generate any more attention than a regular protest or not, but it is a very origional idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-immolation Actually, this one is pretty creepy... But bound to get attention. You won't see the lasting impact, but... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest Where I got those from... Big list there actually. Just thought I would put those on here since they are pertaining, at least somewhat.' I am not familiar with System of a down. I have heard OF them. But never listened to them. I think that one of the best protest songs ever (at least not written by Guthrie or Dylan) was Country Joe's I-Feel-Like-Im-Fixing-To-Die Rag.
actually, you can rebel by getting out info that power structures would rather hold close. Information is freedom, but it surely isn't free! It's one reason I support errowid and Crimenthic, among others. I think the label comment is a typical serious answer. So if we want to embody a peaceful resistance to the current power, what shorthand could be develop? "Whither goest thou freaks and hippies?" Are we at a splintered subculture? Are goths, street punks, neo hippies et al, in need of an umbrella term? or are we the new resistance? as to the drugs, I think they are simply part of culture, and like say, meat eating, some do, some don't and my don't we get touchy on it? I'm an occasional partaker. I'd miss them if I completely stoppped, but in the way I miss Mexico, rather than a lover that walked out last week (allusion: I'm married almost 10 years) I take a bit of offense to the assumption that free love is alive and well in neo hip. Hooking up and generally immature behaviour is SO MUCH a part of dominator culture, that we don't need to actively practise it. Sure, some couples are flexible, and people get together, but I don't see it as "ours" anymore. I'd like to see a knowledge of larger parts of the '60s counterculture scene and a cultural literacy in what those movements within movements meant then and their legacy now. What did we learn from the SDS? Panthers? Berkley intellectuals (who were adamantly NOT hippies)? Diggers? the street theatre groups? the back to the landers who went back to the cities? the kamikazee concert promoters? rally organizers? and most importantly: what will these current protest/peaceful resistance groups have to add to humanity's store of ideas? DL, I forget how thought-provoking you are. I'm glad to cyber know you!
darklunacy, i was actually thinking about the huge banner idea a few days ago when i saw a giant fur factory. it's a really good idea. you're right, we have to find new ways to get noticed, and i'm sure we can come up with a lot. anyone remember the time before "my humps" when the black eyed peas first got famous with "where is the love?", and how the white question mark on black with a red square around it was plastered everywhere? that was a great idea. and the pre-election stuff on music channels was amazing, even if it didn't make much of a difference.
Do you mean I haven't seized this golden opportunity to post and insult numerous people? I must be getting old. Consider yourselves insulted, whomever you may be.
Lets put this one down right now. It is not the peace activists who are protesting at soldiers funerals, it is the right wing anti-gay hate groups. Google Fred Phelps and James Dobson if you do not believe me. I have heard of dozens of anti-gay protests at soldier funerals, I have heard of no anti-war protests at soldiers funerals. If you google "anti-war protests at soldiers funerals", you get stories about ant-gay protests at soldier funerals. So please do not imply that it is the anti-war movement who are being disrepectful, when it is the gay hate groups who are responsible for this.
Wow! I am surprised to say, you ARE right! I am actually happy it wasn't pacifists and such. I am sad it happened at all, but thanks a lot for clearing that up! I also have something to confront people about when they mention it. I have gotten those resources from news and such, so they haven't told the entire story, eh?
DarkLunacy I just missed the "hippie" era. I caught on early though. When they started interrupting my cartoons with watergate. You'll all know if you are truly a hippie when a draft gets reinstated. They way things are going it's not so far fetched. When they come yank you off the street to fight a war you don't believe in. That was the real catalyst for the movement in my opinion. When it happens don't fight violence with violence. Sit down in the street holding hands and let everyone see who is really civilized. They can beat you and imprison you, but they can't take your soul. If it was up to common people there would never be any wars Governments with agendas are what that is all about. I'm new here. I have been a lonely hippie for a long time. Glad I found this forum and some like minded people. I thought everyone had traded in their values for SUV's. I'm glad to see so many young people here. I know the times are frustrating right now. It makes you angry and you want to change things. That is good. Stand up and speak your mind. Lean on your friends and march or have a sit in. Do what your heart tells you to do. Our strength is in the energy of the young people. Just don't let your anger make you give in and use their tactics. Violence solves nothing. "There is nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitor" "infinite love is the only truth...everything else is an illusion"
I felt like being a smartass.. and I was gonna say something stupid like "I have a movement.. lets all put moldy bread in bags put the bags over our heads put duct tape around our neck to secure bag then hang ourselves in the basement" ...... you bitch about people not oding stuff waht are you doing?
i think it's to late for all the changes, nothing will change, or maybe will, but ther's more chances it'l be in a bad way and why counter-culture wouldt fit in theses days than in the 60's, it had an impact at the time, why it wouldt have one today, maybe it will, but it'l never happen, things changed too much, it's like we live in another world compared to the 60's
Well your right, we won't make a differance. Well, at least not with THAT attitude about it! If you think possitively about it there is a better chance it will happen. You have to want it and beleive it and trake action to make it happen man! I am sure there were skeptics just like that before the 60's. Remember how the 60's came about. It came like a hurricane straight out of a time of materialism, racism, close mindedness, and hate. You can't wait to be invited into a society like then or now. You have to waltz in and say "How are you? We are here to change the world!". And like DarkLuancy said (I beleive he said it, sorry if it was someone else), we aren't in the 60's! If you are sitting around waiting for the 60's to come back, then you are wasting your time! We can't live in the 60's, man! We have to live in the now! Our concern should be about the now and the future, we can only learn from the past, not live in it!
gee, all the freaking news i get named Phelps, and the great majority had a photograph or video clip of those mouth-breathing morons.
I don't know if it was the way the news covered it, or the fact that I don't watch news most of the time. I checked my local new's website and they had it correct on there, but I can't remember what they said about it.
