    Most use gelatin.
",,,,I dont know wtf that all entails,,,,"
I find that Google-ing a topic that I don't know much about really helps me before I post.
There are actually, thankfully quite a few companies that produce vegan(plant-based gelatin) now.

Most marshmallows aren't vegetarian due to the gelatin. I hope most vegetarians know about gelatin by now... if you want marshmallows, Pangea sells them and there are a couple recipes online. I think there are marshmallow spreads that are vegetarian, too, but I haven't actually seen any.

Marshmellows have gelatin, which contains ground up animal bones.
I think its gross, but I know a lot of vegetarians who eat gelatin anyways.
Gelatin is in everything from those weird sugar-ladened yogurts to altoids...

But I hear you can get vegan marshmellows..

Actually there are several fruit and "jello" cups that are vegetarian and some that are vegan. (one by Dole is vegan...then they put carmine/cochineal extract for colour! ugh! Cochineal extract is crushed up beetles...mmm)

Anyhow, to make these "wiggle", they manufacturers use carageenan, which is from seaweed. Agar is also a stabilizar in many foods. Yes, you can get vegan marshmallows

and you can also make your own marshmallws with vegan gelatin

Gelatin is pretty gross, considering it is connective tissue, bones, ligaments, etc. Eme's Kosher Gel was reported to have been using animal gelatin when they said it was vegetable, violating ethical and religious beliefs of their customers. I am not sure what legal action was taken against them but I used to occasionally eat Eme's. I will never buy from that brand again, even if they were to be ligitimately vegan.

a few weeks ago i was eating lunch at the school cafeteria and a vegetarian i've seen comes up eating a rice-crispy treat. so i tell him what's in it, and, after arguing and thinking for a few minutes, gives it away. two days later, he walks by eating another one... [IMG]

I have a jar of marshmallow fluff here (Kraft brand) and the 4th ingredient is egg whites. I dunno about marshmallows, 'cause we never use them... but marshmallow fluff does have egg in it.

I meant to say I HAVE seen marshmallow fluff with egg products, sorry.

I believe the Smucker's brand marshmallow ice cream topping is vegan, though.

since the closest to marshmallows I ever had was Lucky Charms: side note, DO NOT separate the entire box into cereal and charms and them attempt to crush the WHOLE pile of charms into a ball and eat it....don't ask... I was young and dumb....
what exactly do marshmallows DO in food?

Ok, I decided to go vegetarian about a week ago (better late than never), and actually had an argument with my friend tonight about gelatin in marshmallows. Is all gelatin made of crushed animal bones? Does anyone know if Peeps have animal products in them...? He thinks it's stupid that I wouldn't eat anything with gelatin, but I told him I don't want to consume anything with animals in it...

Well I mean think about what it IS and it's petty gross regardless.
