They either mess about with the photo period during flowering which can cause female plants to produce some male flowers or they induce male flowers on a female plant using Gibberelic acid. Some times a plant may produce one or two male flowers anyway, thats why a lot of people won't buy feminised seeds as they are in reality hermaphrodites although only producing a few male parts.

They shouldn't do the green house seed co are OK. Keep an eye on them especially late in flowering. If the seeds were free though it makes you wonder why.
