I'm looking to pick up a very cheap sitar. I need it for one song I'm recording, but that's it. I'm just gonna find the notes and play it as best I can. I have no interest in playing the instrument, I just need one for a day or two.

So my question is, before I go out looking for them, what is the cheapest price anyone thinks I could find one for. It has to be moderately playable, but it's not really important if it doesn't hold together. Like I said, a few days tops is all I need it for.

So, anyone know anything about cheap-ass sitars? :p

I aw one on there for 79.00 but it's not in stock. And before anyone tells me what kind of quality I'll get from a $79 sitar, I say again, if it holds up for a few days, I'm happy. Besides that, it don' matta.

There are different scale sitars. They make small scale ones that are much cheaper but I don't know how playable they are or how good they sound. There are also 3/4 and 1/2 scale sitars. The smaller ones usually don't have the rear toomba. My guess is that the small scale ones probably sound sitar-like but probably don't have the full-resonance that the full scale ones do, much like the difference between a 1/4 scale cello and a full scale cello.

The price of sitars in India is usually quite cheap but the shipping overseas is expensive.

I'm not too worried about that. As long as it sounds half decent.

He lives in the middle of nowhere...but a digital recording can be done in multiple places.
Nalancer, you are not going to like this advice, but a midi sitar sound is better than playing a wall hanger.
or, have a look see at Fareed Haque's guistar
