Is there anyone up here by the great lakes that is concerned with the environmental impact that humans are having on them? I'm here by lake superior and slowly becoming more aware and motivated to speak out and try to get something done. I'd like to hear what all you know about the issues currently surounding the area. Thanks, Sunshine
I live outside Detroit, and yes, I'm quite worried about the Lakes. Now that they're starting to recover from the pollution put into them during all that heavy industry in the past (Lake Erie is even much better), I hate to see people (said: Republicans and corporations) still disregarding a precious natural resource and source of beauty. I hate hearing about how people want to divert water from the Great Lakes to the Southwest states. I say, if you live in a desert, you shouldn't be groing water-intensive crops or playing golf. If you want those things, move out of the desert; don't ruin our Lakes for your stupidity. I always donate money (meager amounts so far, but hey, I'm a struggling college kid!) to environmental organizations that come around, I write my Congressmen to urge them to continue to support the Clean Water Act, and I vote (Bush: out the door in 2004!).
I was just at Lake Erie yeaterday, and from what I could see, it looked nice and clean. I hope that it always stays that way. I recall in the past though the local news stations reporting cases of individuals getting sick from the Erie waters. I hope it's gotten better.
Well I grew up near Lake Huron, and I always noticed that the beach at least was much more cleaner on the Canadian side than on Michigan's side. Now I am in Texas, and trust me, the Gulf is much nastier than the Great Lakes.
Yes I think that a major enviromental impact is surrounding the great lakes. I live in northern michigan, on lake michigan, and am not suprized to see the water depth drop to astounding rates, nor it rocket back up, because of all the commerical baggage we are not only putting into these lakes, but the impact of all the water chains being polluted and evoluting together. I believe that the green house effect is creating major problems with the water systems of the world and just the whole weather shifts of the universe. Perrie is a MAJOR problem effecting the Great Lakes, ICE MOUNTAIN is a bi-product most famously known that is taking the water from the great lakes and bottling it by the thousands and thousands of gallons. With the lake levels being an all time low just last summer, this is Not safe. Check your water labels, and boycott the perrie company. Them Basterds... The lakes are so dentramental, and a natural splender to everyone.
the water everywhere is so poisoned now, nobody will stop until something drastic happens, i hope nature's wrath gets the job done someday, it'll be one hell of a storm
The Great Lakes have many invasive species in them, it's unfortunate. Mostly arrived by ship ballast water. Includes: sea lampreys, zebra mussels, Round Goby, purple loosestrife, and watermilfoil.
