Just shows you that there are probably a lot of people out there who would like to go barefoot in public. Most are too shy to do it until they see someone else barefooting with no negative consequences.
Can't wait to see the pics!

I have a friend in GA who got stopped by a cop for something. Anyways, he happened to notice she didnt have any shoes on. He was like "your not wearing shoes" ... and she was like, "its not illegal to drive without them."

    Power to the barefooters :H

Yes. And power to any of us who can root out the control freaks which seem to be almost everywhere. Root out, and stand up to.

It IS illegal to drive barefoot here. I think it's an eighty dollar fine. You can't go barefoot in pubs either. I wouldn't want to anyway. I work in a bar and i get to see exactly how much broken glass is left at the end of the night.

That seems like a really absurd law to have. It would be hard to enforce because how are they gonna know youre driving barefoot unless theyre looking into your car constantly. I doubt many people really get pulled over and ticketed for that. My advice would just be to do it anyways, I doubt the cops really have time to stop and waste on giving a ticket to some barefoot chick.

or have a pair of flip flops near the front of the driver seat so "IF" you do get stopped you just slip them on and "you weren't driving barefoot". The cop wouldn't be able to "prove" you were driving barefoot.

    stupid law in any event.

You could do that but that would just basically be giving in to the law and wouldnt really accomplish anything. Its better to just stay barefoot and show people that the law is wrong and that there is nothing bad about driving barefoot.

I can't find any evidence of this online, although I can't find anything like the US state letters either. Did you ever see this in writing? Just asking a single cop isn't proof; in the US a lot of people believe it's illegal too, and some have even been ticketed for it by cops who believe it is, but when some person wrote the Department of Motor Vehicles in each state, they learned that it was NOT. So unless I actually see the exact law quoted, I'm very sceptical to believe it's illegal anywhere, especially in a country where barefooting is as common as it is in Australia.

That's disappointing to hear. Australia of all places! I always heard it's the opposite there. But, I do understand it's a huge country like the US, and thus probably has many regional differences, like we do. Your region may not be one of the barefoot friendly ones?

I agree with Myranya. There are people in the U.S. as well that swear it is illegal to drive barefoot in one locality or another. And even on this forum, where you would think most people are a little more enlightened about barefoot rights, someone will still occasionally post that they "know for a fact" it's illegal where they live. But the fact is, there are no states in the United States that have laws banning barefoot driving. But I'm not sure about Australia.

So, have you actually seen the statute in writing where it says that? If so, how is it worded? Do they just ban bare feet, or is it worded such that "footwear is required" or perhaps "appropriate footwear"? If so, what is the definition of "footwear" in the eyes of the law?

A law like that really just doesn't make any sense at all. Think about it: WHY would it be illegal to drive barefoot? How could driving barefoot be anything but much safer than having some cumbersome footwear on your feet? Requiring shoes on your feet to drive makes about as much sense as requiring mittens on your hands to drive.

A barefoot person has much greater control over the car pedals because he or she can feel them better. Shoes or other footwear not only cut off that essential tactile sensation, they can slip off pedals or get hung up between pedals, potentially causing an accident.

If there ever were any laws related to footwear and driving, it makes a lot more sense to make driving with footwear illegal. Driving with bare feet is the safest way to drive, and I would never compromise my safety or risk my life or the lives of anyone riding with me by driving any other way.

Is there something similar to the Department of Motor Vehicles or some other law enforcement entity there in Australia that you can write to to get it in writing if there really is or isn't such a law? I wouldn't just ask a local policeman.

I heard that you aren't supposed to drive barefoot incase there is a piece of broken glass stuck to the brake pedal. And when stepping on it the bodys natural reaction to pull away would cause an accident...

It just makes so much sense cause you know despite the fact that I have never even seen broken glass on the ground where I live, I'm sure my brake pedal is just covered with it!

That is just absolutely absurd. I can't recall ever hearing anything so ridiculous.

Yeah, sure. And how often has that ever happened? That is so stupid. What IS likely to cause an accident is the slippery bottom of a shoe slipping off the brake pedal.

Oh, yes. Makes a lot of sense. (You obviously don't buy that either.) As to the chances of that actually happening, there's probably a much greater chance of being struck by lightening just as you're getting in your car than having broken glass on the brake pedal.
