Existentialism put to practical use? What did you people think of the movie? Yeah, i know it's just a movie and even a comedy, but it also exposed a lot of people to concepts that never entered their thought process before...
what do you mean exactly when you asked if it put existentialism to a "practical" use? i watched it for a psychology lecture actually, so we were studying it from that prespective but i got a lot out of it, existentially speaking i think the film most def. exposed questions on the thought process through exploring mindfulness. you know the part when mark whalberg and jason schwartzman are hitting one another in the face with the red ball? i have to say i enjoyed that, mostly because it was a moment of freely existing in "the now"; of being aware of your thoughts in that very moment. the film covered quite a bit on perception, coinceidences, human behaviour, purpose of existing.....i very much enjoyed it.
its a good film, pretty much a jumble of a variety of philosophy's ranging from schopenhauer, nietzsche, kant to heidegger good film none the less
more than that, its taken directly from Schopenhauers concept of the will and pleasure and pain, where he basically states that you can only ever experience the "will" (the primal creative driving force of existence) through periods of extream pleasure or pain. if i was to hit someone in the face with a hammer in that instant of pain they would experience the will, but also Kants Dich an Sich (thing in itself) the true nature of existence. Simularly through orgasm or extream moments of pleasure.
and I like how it demonstrated how conflict can push opposing forces to a greater extreme than either was to begin with........we are all unified but create divisions between us and then the ego created widens those divisions. ie schwartzman's comment in the closing Nice to see Lily Tomlin playing a cool role again. I was always a fan of that old 80's movie "The Incredible Shrinking Woman". Schwartzman was as good in this movie as he was in Rushmore!! Dustin Hoffman gave a near perfect theatrical performance! The Soundtrack was cool as hell.....very different Thought Marky Mark was excellent for once, make that twice cause Boogie Nights rocked......"Nobody Fucks With Brock And Chest" LOL
Does anyone own the DVD? What do you think of the deleted scene where albert and brad are breakdancing in the forest and then brad throws the camera against the tree and tells albert to listen. Everything just goes silent and then brad puts his head on albert's chest. That to me is so beautiful. Just the idea of listening to silence or 'the sound of everything' and feeling bonded by it.
Yea that moive was so great... I only seen the ending and never the beginning ... I have to buy that moive. Really funny and really interasting moive to watch...
Movies are just like words. They have meaning Sorry Im a filmmaker... But, yeah, The film had good intentions. And posed a question we all have to answer. Life, or dead life
i love that movie. it's amazing. i don't know what else to say. but did anyone else find jude law trying to hide his accent funny and distracting? i love what he does with his mouth and face to cover it up.
This film is really cool. Last time I watched it, I was on mushrooms, and it was insanely weird. It's interesting that a mainstream comedy like this could have these kinds of concepts in it. I thought it was a great movie.
