my mom has some kind of defect, so she wont let us have cats or dogs. i managed to make her let me have mice, which is kind of cool but kind of lame too. one really hates being grabbed or touched, so you can never hold it, and the other one used to like me, but her eye got infected so i have to put this creme on it, so she hates me too. now theyre not even pets, just things i have to clean up after. anyone else have mice?

Yeah. but i don't have to do anything to them. They take care of themselves.

Don't agree with keeping caged animals.

Never had mice, had a hamster though years ago. She was great fun, didn't live long though which sucked.

I'm not really that clued up on rodents, but as a rule with any companion animal read as much as you can about them. I know there are loads of helpful websites out there. (well that holds true for rabbits... so probably mice too)

I'm not going to worry about the cages debate. There isn't really an alternative for rodents, and if they get plenty of supervised free roaming then they should be content.

Rats make great pets, they learn tricks, learn their name, and you can share all your food and goodies with them, they love that. Plus they rarely bite. I used to work at a pet store, and we would suggest rats to anyone looking at hamsters or mice for their kids, because they bite a lot less.

No alternative, eh? How about letting them free?
Then, If you were kept in a cage your whole life, it would be ok, as long as you could roam around under supervision?

    Would you be content?

I know what you mean about mice! I had my rodent handling assessment at college (i'm doing animal care) a while ago- all the other rodents are fine, but the mice are so scared that it takes away any pleasure of handling them. They all just run to the corners and when you try to pick one up it bites you.
Apparently though, if you just handle them gently ever day and let them wander over your hands and stuff they can get quite tame. A lot of time and effort needed i reckon!

Teehee...my friends laugh at me. I'm the only one they know that would buy mice for a pet, not to feed a snake or something. :) I love mice, they're so cute. I felt pathetic today because my mom wouldn't let me get one, so I bought a mouse cat toy. :) She's in my room now. Yea, I'm sad I know.

LOL that's cute. I used to have all manner of toy pets before actually adopting some real ones.

BTW I love your sig quote, I used to have that in my sig ages ago.

my sister had a mouse. it stunk. aparently they're the worst for smell. i like rats. rats are bigger and if they get loose they're easier to find and u can sorta sence them before u step on them. i had one that learn to open the cage since i left it unlatched but he died

i used to have pet mice as a child...... at the time i thought they were cared for well but looking back i think they had a horrible life and if i ever have kids they wont be getting pet mice.they had big cages, but cages are cages and are not nice for any type of animal to be confined in. the last two i had were kept in separate cages so they wouldn’t breed, and that is cruel to keep animals locked away without any company of their own kind imo. They also got fed crap commercial food from the pet store. i really loved them when i was a kid, but they still had a horrible life.

The nearest i got to having mice recently, was for a few years i fed the wild mice in the house, leaving grains in a safe place for them, so they wouldn’t get killed by the cat. That went on for a long time.. And i was worried they would never go away, but they have gone now, we found 2 dead mice, seemed they died of natural causes we found them in places the cat can't get to... its weird timing because we are about to move countries and i was worried about what would happen to them when new people come to the house, seems i don’t have to worry and they are safe in mouse heaven. i left the food out for a while but its not been touched.

Umm...I hope you dont have kids.

house mice are health hazards....they carry all kinds of disease..and by you feeding them...they take that as a full-blown welcome and will go after all your food...no matter how "under control" you seem to think you have the situation.wild mice are wild animals not cute pets.

My aunt found a dead mouse in her flour sack once..and mouse poops in the cupboards...on dishes. We had a huge mouse problem too.

and we knew it was bad when the mice would crawl on you at night as you slept. I found mouse shit in my bed before we got our cat. And we had an infant at the time...the little rodents had to go.

We have Genie now...and she keeps the critters away..even occassionally still gets one.

If you want to try non-lethal methods of detering mice...try sprinkling peppermint oil around the windows and floor of your basement and attic.mice hate the smell of mint.

also keep in mind, that in some parts of country, house mice carry the Hanta virus...which is an endemic but incurable and fatal disease.

Dont put yourself and your loved ones at risk simply because you think it's nice and polite to feed the critters in your home.

also, I suggest you learn about the many infections you can get from being exposed to decaying flesh. You have found some mice dead...there could be more and those bodies are just festoring and rotting and getting maggoty...and I'm sure the smell in some spaces could become rather unpleasant.

ugh.keep the wild mice outside or in the least..restricted to the insides of your walls....dont invite them into your kitchen and living space.

    Nope i dont have children....

yeah i felt very sorry for them, it was freezing cold winter and they were running along one wall in the sitting room i think to try and find food. They were also getting caught & tortured by the cat. Once i left some food out they stopped gettign hurt, and i stopped seeing them running around and.... now there are none at all. So its all worked out well. I wouldnt recommend it to others to do though, its too much hassle, and as you say dangerous.

Ive never had a mouse problem like you describe, the most i have seen of them when i left some food out was a few droppings by where i left the food ... this area was cleaned and kept hygenic and was in a isolated place. I also stopped seeing them run around. This house is also old and prolly has lots of holes where they run in and out.

I also dont live in USA, and i cant find anything about the Hanta virus in my country, so im assuming we dont have it. I am in NZ and we dont have lots of diseases and animals that other countries have. Thx for bringing it to my attention though because we are moving countries and i need to learn about new diseases and animals that we dont get here to stay safe.

I know here people usually set mouse traps...... and plug up holes to try keep mice out....

in the USA do people get exterminators to poison or gas mice? Is that a normal thing or something?

Also while trying to find info on the Hanta virus i saw this and it freaked me out!

"If bubonic plague is a problem in your area, spray flea killer or spread flea powder in the area before setting traps. This is important. If you control rodents but do not control fleas as well, you may increase the risk of infection with bubonic plague, since fleas will leave rodents once the rodents die and will seek out other food sources, including humans."

do you get this???????????? It is freaking me out what diseases and stuff are overseas.... man oh man.
