The largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet has begun in Canada.

By the end of the hunt, more than 300,000 seals are expected to be clubbed or shot to death by fishermen who hunt seals off-season to pick up extra cash by selling their skins. Almost all of their victims will be babies -- some as young as 12 days old.

During a recent hunt, veterinarians who examined dead seals concluded that 42% of the seals examined had most likely been skinned while they were alive and still conscious.

    </B>
Polls consistently show that most Canadians oppose the hunt, but still the Canadian government and fishing industry refuse to end it.

But there is new hope on the ice. Canada has a new Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, and a new party in power. With enough public support, they may consider ending this terrible hunt forever.

Sign this petition now and send it to anyone who cares about protecting the lives of Canada's seals.

"They only wanna save the cute animals"--Denis Leary

My problem with the whole seal-clubbing controversy is simply this...where the hell is Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, PeTA, and the rest of the seal-huggers when the main cod fishing season starts in Canada? Where are the protests for the yearly Nova Scotia shark competitions? How come PeTA isn't advocating protests in the New England towns where the main industries are lobster/king crab/swordfish? Why isn't there an international outrage over the mass slaughter of crawfish in the southern bayou?

And please don't give me some obscure organization that campaigns for lizard liberation or something. And Fishinghurts.com does not count either because there is never an international stink over any kind of fishing.

I sincerely want to know why Paul McCartney does not open his egotistical mouth when "ugly" animals are being slaughtered by the thousands.

Where are the protests for the welfare of the italian cheese maggots? Maggots are living creatures..yet everyday they are consumed by the millions by Italians who enjoy a cheese delicacy that requires maggots to create the dish?

Won't someone please think of the maggots? :p

I think you get my point. The only reason why anyone cares about the seal hunts is because seals are fluffy, big-eyed, mammals. I guarantee that if seals looked like mutated, clawed, jellyfish-like creatures...no one would care.

I can't think of any practical reason why these animals are slaughtered, other than to satiate human barbarism.

I've seen all the available videos. Nice try though.

I still don't see why I should care more about seals then any of the other billions of creatures killed each day in this world.

I don't value a seal above a shark or tuna or a crab or a chicken or cow...ect.

I still stand firm on the belief that if seals were not cute, no one would give a flying crap.

so since maggots and shrimp arent getting equal time we should forget all about the seals:rolleyes:

btw, paul maccartney is a vegan and promotes veganism publicly which includes no fish (or any other "non-cutesy" animal, oceanic or otherwise) eating and sport fishing/hunting.

Yeah, French Canadian seals probably chain smoke..they wouldn't enhance the flavor in any way.

They do eat Flipper pie in Nova Scotia.

Yes I'm aware of McCartney's veganism. HOWEVER, he DOES NOT pitch a screaming fit when the Canadian cod fishing season starts, so give it a rest already.

And I wrongly assumed that you, Elle, the professed animal lover would agree that ALL animals deserve EQUAL attention. You obviously don't. I never see you bitch on behalf of shrimp or maggots.

Do you protest the annual Nova Scotia shark derbies? I'm guessing not, you probably didn't even know about those until I just mentioned them. However, I belong to a couple of organizations that protest the derby each year. I donate money every month to a shark conservation and research society.

Seals are shark's food. I protest the seal culling only because it cuts into the food source for sharks and orcas.

Much as I fear sharks, they have just as much right to this world as humans and even seals. As for maggots, where would we be without them? After all, someone's has to govern us!

LOL! oh quit your cheap assumptions. i save my protesting and activism for my real life and dont do it on these forums so obviously you wouldnt know what i do or do not protest to. so you protest the shark derbies and donate money to them...what do you want a cookie? am i supposed to be impressed? im not. it's not a fucking race between animal lovers and activist to see who is working the most protests or donating the most money. everyone and every animal and every species counts and is important. i dont give a fuck if you saving maggots and flies from death. it doesnt make you any more involved than the person who cares about seals and horses being slaughtered. animal abuse is animal abuse whether it's a seal or a spider. the fact that alot of people seemingly care about "cute" animals is not PETA's fault and it's not paul's fault so quit your bitching.
god i've never heard someone complain so damn much! LOL!

    Except for you?

You bitch alot..more then me because I don't post as much on the forums these days. And when you aren't bitching here, you are bitching on the Peta2 forums, the peta myspace groups, at your friends and family members for not being vegan or wearing leather. You bitch at anyone whom you don't agree with concerning diet and lifetstyle. I have seen you on these very forums jump and harp on people.

But there is no arguing with a Petard, you're so brainwashed with their dogma that you think you are free from imperfection...better then everyone else.

I don't have to know you personally to know what you do, I know your type. I get accused of being like you on a daily basis. I can't walk around with a petition to shut down a dirty, local, puppy-mill-supporting, pet shop without people mocking me and calling me a "crazy PETA radical".

I wish PeTA and it's sheeple followers would disappear and leave the animal saving to those with our heads out of our asses.

I do bitch and rant alot. I atleast have the gut to admit that I do and I usually only go after people that say stupid shit. People so blind and one-sided that they, despite their claims, are the least tolerant people on the planet.

Here's an example of a openminded person versus the typical PeTA member...

    GUY: I hunt, I fish, I trap.
OMP: Why do you do those? Sustainance? Sport? Population curbing?
PM: Oh my god! you suck! you are a murderer!

    GIRL: I ride horses.
OMP: Cool! Do you compete or just pleasure riding? What's your horses name?
PM: If you insist on enslaving a noble creature, your tack BETTER be vegan.

Don't believe me? Go read the forums at Peta2.com or go visit the peta groups at MySpace. That is if you can manage to sift through the Emo-boohoo-my-mom-wont-let-me-be-veggie-wahh-the-kids-at-school-ripped-down-my-anti KFC-flyers posts and threads.

this is the only forum i viset or have ever visited. i certainly am a vegan and damn proud of it. im also damn proud that i join in protests and other activism where i use PETA to network. done lots of bitching on these boards? HAH! now that is just downright laughable. gave me quite a chuckle. thanks. you know nothing about me and your cheap and childish assumptions say more about you than they do me. I'm not a "type". I'm an indiviual who cares about animals. you dont like when people accuse you of being a "petard" for animal activism but then you accuse me without knowing me. my you are quite hypocritical!

and IMO childish and full of negativity. that can't be any fun.

I am a french acadian, who didn't know much about any seal hunt here in Canada. Then I heard about Pammy being booed at the awards show on the east coast recently for mentioning it. Growing up in the maritimes I had the opportunity to raise one as a pet/friend. I allways heard of natives and newfies sealing. Knowing the struggles of life in these areas it's just another way to survive. We can't all get by driving vehicles to the grocery store, especially if they are hundreds of miles away. I don't think there should be large commercial operations, but don't agree with a flat out ban.

Maybe we should just give up animal activism altogether. ....(sarcasm)
People do demonstrations in hope that other people will change and support them. The public is not going ot care about shrimp or maggots for a LONG time so advocating for them would only make the AR movememnt as a whole the laughingstock. Whatever gets people, whether it be cuteness or whatever, I don't care. I DO care that the seal hunt stops. If you dont want to do anything, fine, but don't fuss when other people do something.
