I call bullshit. The US has the capabilities, conventional even, to wipe out the Middle East. They really can. They could kill tens of millions if it fancied them. The US has attempted, not wholly successfully, to fight the war in Iraq with minimal civillian casulties, but the enemy uses civillians as camoflage (an unfortunate result of US military superiority). Liberal esitmates have put "civilian" deathes in Iraq at about 100,000-150,000 (many of these were not directly killed by US troops, but the destabilizing effect of the US's presence is wholly responsible). The US could start bombing large cities and kill tens of thousands daily assuming the troops would be willing to go along. Many wouldn't. Sadly, some would be more than happy to do so.

Sidenote: Iranian leadership is currently doing everything they can short of bombing the US to ensure that they will be hit by US military power. I have no idea why they are doing this. I hope they don't have the misguided notion that the US doesn't have the capabilities or will to do it. It they believe this, then they might be duly suprised when their nuclear facilities start getting hit with tactical, subterranian nuclear warheads.

The punishment of those who pit themselves against Allah and His Messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement, except those who repent before you have them in your power (5:33-34)

As for those who disbelieve in Our communications, We shall make them enter fire; so oft as their skins are thoroughly burned, We will change them for other skins, that they may taste the punishment (4:56)

Allah 's Apostle said, " I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,' and whoever says, None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,' his life and property will be saved by me except for Islamic law, and his accounts will be with Allah, (either to punish him or to forgive him.)" (Hadith 4:52:196)

God's first saying that He will take care of the disbelievers, but when they attack, you fight back.

this one is in direct reference to when the Meccans (the idolaters) broke the treaty and attacked the Prophet. But here you go for the full verse:

[9:4] Except those of the disbelievers with whom you have entered into a treaty and who have not subsequently failed you in anything nor aided anyone against you. So fulfil to these the treaty you have made with them till their term. Surely Allah loves those that are righteous.

[9:5] And when the forbidden months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever you find them and take them captive, and beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and observe Prayer and pay the Zakaat, then leave their way free. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

9:6] And if anyone of the idolaters seeks protection of thee, grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allah; then convey him to his place of security. That is because they are a people who have no knowledge.

9:7] How can there be a treaty for these idolaters with Allah and His Messenger, Except those with whom you entered into a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? So, as long as they are true to them. Surely Allah loves those who fulfil their obligations.

No. The only qualifications are what I've already posted. I'd repost them, but that would seem redundant.

Iran won't be invaded. They will be bombed with subterranean, tactical nuclear warheads in order to take out their nuclear reactors. I hope this doesn't happen. Time will take care of any threat in Iran through social evolution. I think that is one big reason their whack-ball president is trying to force this confrontation. The only way to turn the internal tide against the theocracy in Iran is by creating a red herring with the US. Sadly, this will probably work if cooler heads don't prevail.

I think that I've heard how Islamic warriors will always make the Westerners pay in war, but they always get quickly rolled even with the Western powers fighting with both hands tied behind their backs. Proof positive of the supremacy of technology.
