Hello, I have an unfinished basement with a small wine cellar type room. It is probably 3 feet wide and 6 feet long. I don't want to get crazy or spend a lot of money, so how what would be the easiest way to grow some plants inside this room to get some bud for my head.

what is the cheapest way to do the lighting?

How long does it generally take to grow indoors?

How many seeds to I have to plant to get a couple of female plants?

do I have to vent out the grow room, and how can I do this cheaply?

How bad will my basement smell once these things start growing?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks for the help in advance

I started in this forum with asking about outside growing, but I am worried somebody might see my plant, so I want to explore my indoor options as well, thanks

I was also considering building a grow box and keeping it in my attic. Nobody ever goes up there, so it may be more visitor friendly. I was thinking of building a box out of plywood and using floresant lights.

    any suggestion?

I reccomend picking up a grow book, pick up "Marijuana Horticulture" the Medical Growers Guide by Jorge Cervantes

It'll do you the best, it has 3 grow "designs" in it in great detail (maybe more?) and 1 of them is the attic grow. Check it out, understand the basics of a growroom and then use your creativity for your own spot.

Ebay has cheap lights as opposed to buying them new (actually, you can get some new and cheap on Ebay) and don't use flouros...they're fine for vegetation but suck ass for flowering.

I would recommend a 600W HPS light with a growlux bulb for your basement. Just grow in soil mixed with 20% pearlite to start. Fox farm soil is meant to be good. I'd start with 10 good seeds you should get enough females from ten. Have an oscillating fan blow air over all your plants fairly slowly at first then turn the speed up as they get bigger. You need a decent extractor fan set high up in your room some where to pull out the hot air and odours. This can be one of the hardest parts to set up if theres no holes in the walls or no windows. If your struggling i've heard of people removing the ceiling rose from the light fitting on the ceiling making that hole bigger then putting the extractor in it, this then extracts the air into the space between the ceilin and floor. Basically you need to extract the air out of the room somehow. Its normally up to the grower to use there initiative. As the hot air is extracted cooler air will automatically enter the room wherever it can. This is called a passive intake.
The extractor fan removes a lot of the odour from the room so you have to be carefull where the air is extracted to if its outside make sure its not where people are likely to walk past and smell it. An ozone generator is probably the best thing to remove the smell. Shop around though as there prices vary. Ionisers are a cheaper option but not as effective. A carbon filter connected to your extractor is the best set up, you can buy a fan a carbon filter and ducting altogether as a kit. Although this can be expensive. Setting up a grow room can be very expensive but if you shop carefully and are handy at DIY its surprising how cheaply you can set up a basic room. The most important piece of kit is a proper light. Without correct lighting you will never grow a decent crop. For your room size I would use a minimum of a 400W but a 600W would be better. 1000W would be be perfect but I reckon in a basement you would be struggling to keep the temperature down. Theres also the option of combinations like two 400W lights this would be probably what I would do. But as its you first grow and you want to keep things relatively small and not to expensive just stick with the one light. Search on ebay for High Pressure Sodium Low bay lights these are used to light factories and warehouses they use exactly the same bulbs as grow lights but they tend to be half the price. A lot of the books say use metal halide bulb for veg and a high pressure sodium for flowering. I use an expanded spectrum high pressure sodium bulb all the way through. There called growlux bulbs. Say for example you buy a 400W HPS lowbay light for $60 you would be better off changing the bulb to a growlux bulb. This isnt essential but for an extra $30 you would stop the plant stretching a lot during the veg period.
You could use a grow box with flourescants in the attic to start your plants off then flower them in the basement with your HPS light. Definitely do as much reading on the subject as you can. You will find most things you need on the internet.
    For seeds try http://www.seedboutique.com
I would get Nirvanas standard strains indoor mix. For only $15 you get 5 different indoor varieties all with similar growth properties ( ten seeds in total). Plus you get another 10 free durban seeds which you could try oudoors.
Start with getting a proper light then some good seeds, do plenty of reading and I'm sure you will do OK.

Forgot to mention it should take 3 or 4 months for an indoor harvest.
