i just posted a thread introducing myself in the intro section... but as i said... im a total newbie in this vegatarian world and im still researching everything. So please teach me and be patient... hehehe... question... are you allowed to eat fish? sorry if it sounds so basic and simple... but i really am a total newbie... :&
Not if you want to actually be a vegetarian. Veg- derives from the word vegetation Fish are creatures, not plants. Essentially if you want to be veggie you'd eat anything that wasnt once a living breathing creature. If you want to go vegan you'd avoid all meat, PLUS any animal by product: milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, eggs, [honey<--some dont do the honey thing], etc. PM me if you have more questions
Also, normally for veggies they don't wear leather or fur, or any other type of material that an animal had to be killed for. Vegans usually wouldn't wear anything that ever came from an animal so that includes things like wool I'm seriously just summarizing this because I gotta run right now, but just to give you a simple idea, I hope that helps a little. [but this is assuming you're going veggie because you care about animals. If it's simply for health reasons, clearly the clothes you wear doesn't technically apply.]
most fish have 5 times the lethal levels of mercury. I would NEVER eat fish. Plus, fish are animals, therefore, if you eat them then you wouldn't be a veg.
Well, I'll take it real easy on you since you're a total newbie. Here are a few definitions to get you started: Omnivore: A person who consumes meat, dairy, eggs, and vegetables. Pescatarian: A person who consumes only fish meat, dairy, eggs. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian: A person who consumes no meat, but consumes dairy and eggs. Lacto-vegetarian: A person who consumes no meat or eggs, but consumes dairy. Ovo-vegetarian: A person who consumes no meat or dairy, but consumes eggs. True vegetarian: A person who consumes no meat, dairy, or egg. Vegan: A person who consumes no animal products. No meat, dairy, egg, gelatin, or anything else that comes from animals. Vegans also do not wear leather, wool, suede, etc., nor do they support companies that animal test. Fruitarian: A person who eats ONLY fruits from plants that the plant either drops off naturally, or doesn't need anymore and doesn't suffer if it is picked. I'm a vegan. So to answer your question ... no. You aren't even half of a vegetarian if you eat fish.
Why do you want to be vegetarian? If you want the title "vegetartian", then no you can't eat fish. If you have health or ethical considerations about your diet, what you are called is less important than what you eat. In any case, if you eat fish, it would be inaccurate to describe yourself as a "vegetarian."
I hope you decide to make the step to vegetarianism. Everyone does it differently. Some people go "cold turkey", some stop eating meat a few days a week, some cut out certain meats first, etc. Get a cookbook! Vegetarians do not eat anything that come sfrom animal flesh: fish, oyesters, shrimp, lobster, crab, pork, beef, etc. Many people like to say they are vegetarian but eat seafood. This is not possible or sharks would be vegetarian Good luck!
True veggies dont eat fish. From an environmental point of view the harvesting/capture/farming of fish has a very big impact on the environment and in terms of food miles is very excessive especiallly prawns.
And you must obviously like to judge people. He just answered the OPs question, give him a break, geez. Some of you honestly jump to conclusions way too fast.
You obviously like to start unnecessary conflict. Tell you what -- they need you more over in Iraq then on this forum. Why don't you go join the military if you like to be an asshole? :$ That way you and your neo-conservative buddies can get high on war instead of judging people who are trying to do some good in this world. Cripes, what is it with people and labels. No, I don't agree with Jean Paul Sartre's philosophy of "no labelling", I think he was on crack. Labelling is a tool of the human mind. It allows you to distinguish between concepts. This is a vegetarian forum. It's a forum for people who have adopted labels and morals, in order to show the world the consequences of animal cruelty and unnecessary slaughter. Think about it. Would you rather have me say "I'm a vegan" or every time would you rather have me say "I do not consume any animal products, such as meat, dairy, eggs, gelatin, leather, wool, suede, or anything else that is produced from animals." I have to say stuff like this almost every day, and I for one get sick and tired of having to repeat myself hundreds of times! The original poster asked if a vegetarian could eat fish. Now, "vegetarian" is a label, and it has a definition, and there are many different types of vegetarianism and pseudo-vegetarianism. Unless your mind is too feeble to remember the differences in people's diets and regurgitate them on command, labelling is a good thing here. I simply put down the most common definitions of most kinds of vegetarians, pseudo-vegetarians, etc. What does this so-called "labelling" do? It informs the person who asked a question of what the different kinds of vegetarians are! Or is the original poster's question too much to ask and expand upon? These aren't so much labels are they are definitions. So chill. Maybe you don't need labels, but I'm willing to bet that the person who asked the question does.
I was going to say most of that, but I got too irritated to explain myself. I miss talking to you. Come on soon, pweeze.
I think you can do whatever you want.. You don't have to live by rules. I think if you think eating animals is wrong, or whatever your reason is, you can base your judgement off of that. These are your choices, not anyone else's.
"Its OK to eat fish cause they dont have any feelings". Kurt Cobain anyways, in a way he is right, fish do not have nerve endings like other animals, but yes they are still in the same kingdom animelia(sp?)
I guess that was the welcoming committee since I was working extra this past week! here is my readers' digest form: people who are becoming veg for personal health rreasons often have a no red meat then drop poultry then fish/sea creatures. if they are NOT a rights activist or doing this for respect life reasons, that's fine. BUT those folks are why we are all here whining about friends/family/ coworkers / servers who think tuna is veg. so we are sensitive to this and need to grow thicker skins. ;P
