Ok, What i have done is loosely backcombed sections of my hair, and put rubberband at the ends and beads in some places. Basically, it is very loosely done. Anyway, I was wondering if after a while, even if my hair untangles completly, will these form into dreadlocks? And how long do you think this will take, if it does work? Thanks guys.

even if your hair untangles from what you backcombed, your hair will form into dreadlocks eventually, as long as you don't comb it. i don't know how long it will take though

I think it totally depends on your hair. My daughter's very fine, red hair came completely loose from the backcombed dreads, and I tried re-backcombing it, and it kept coming loose. It didn't start knotting up until I left it alone. Should have saved myself all that time I spent backcombing and just let it go natural, but I didn't know any better (hadn't found this forum at the time). It's been four months, and her hair is just now starting to knot up good and tight in places. In those other unknotted places, I'm using the "twist-n-rip" method, which works much better than backcombing, at least in her hair.

^so is your daughter's hair separated with rubberbands or anything? Or was it when it started to dread?

I started with thirty little ponytails, held with rubber bands. And then I started backcombing, and backcombing, and backcombing some more. It took a month, and by the time I got them all backcombed, the ones I did first had come loose. When I took the rubber bands out, they had trapped lint and gunk and it was a nightmare getting her hair completely clean (I was using a tiny bit of wax at first, too) so we switched to using beads instead. The beads seemed to work much better than the rubber bands did anyway, and were easier to pull off the locks to wash her hair (I don't wash her hair every time she takes a bath, but when I do, I find it gets much cleaner if I take the beads out first). Even the no-pull special silicone "rubber" bands I got from DHHQ pulled her hair and hurt when I took them out. So my suggestion, if you want your hair sectioned and your dreads more uniform, would be to go to the closest hobby store and get some beads to use instead. Now we only put beads in for decoration, when she wants them in. Most of the time I don't bother. Yeah, some of her locks have joined together, and some have split apart, but personally I think it looks much more interesting than a head full of identical dreads.

it took you a month to backcomb her hair? my hair was all backcombed (then permed to help kink it in there) in 3 hours.

Well, I had dreads for a day. Then they came out. Now I am back to silky straight hair.
