Is it a good idea to attempt to perfect the art of growing with shit seeds first instead of "wasting" good ones, or is there an important difference between how certain strains grow? I only ask because a friend of mine has some decent seeds, but has never grown before. I'd hate to see him waste them on a multitude of errors.

I'd say start with half the seed batch, that way if he fucks up, he still has some seeds to go. Once he can grow, he can get as many seeds as he wants for free.

if u know you have good seeds and shitty seeds then use the shitty ones first to experiment yanno mess around w/e
and when you have a set place to grow and cultivate the good seeds do that

What do you mean by crappy seed? Bag seed you mean?
Yes, different strains will have slightly different preferences and behaviours, but generally speaking, it's all pretty similar.

The only crappy seed is seed that you know came from an inferior strain or is undeveloped.

The main problem with bag seed is that the bud is usually supposed to be sinsemilla (without seeds), and most seeds you would get this way came from hermaphrodites, and you don't wanna grow hermies. But you never really know, I've gotten quite a few really nice strains from bag seed. My personal rule of thumb is, assuming the bud is good, if I find more than 1 or 2 seeds in a bag of buds, those seeds are not candidates.

I would use proper seeds. Grow them in good soil and don't add any fertiliser for the whole grow. Most new growers kill plants playing around with fertilisers if you see a slightly yellow leaf or a leaf curling a bit leave them alone it won't be a nutrient deficiency.
Give it plenty of light and fresh air and be patient. Just let the plant grow and don't try and over complicate things for your first grow. If you grow bag seeds you will not know what to expect it could be a really weedy sativa. Or a hermaphrodite. If your worried just grow half of your seeds.
You can buy decent seeds for $15 so if something does go wrong they can be replaced cheaply.
