Actually shrooms are a poison and they most definitely are trying to harm the human body. But it isnt strong enough to kill people, just strong enough to change your mental state or make you puke afterwards.

where did you get this info from?

I used to think the same thing, before I had the common sense to actually research the stuff (read up on the various substances). I somehow used to buy a lot of urban myths, until I had access to internet and many books.

I think a lot of people are let to believe that, because non-psilocin/psilocybin-containing amanitas have toxins.

polymer: although I KNOW psilocybin is a medicine, not a poison, I've read some journals describe psilocybin in mushrooms as a 'toxin.' I think it's a propaganda technique, because toxin has such a negative connotation. Brainwashing.

I sometimes wonder about you people. Of course mushrooms are a poison that attacks the body why do you think you throw up a lot of the times after. Because your body rejects it, its not healthy day after day. It takes a toll on the human body. You could actually die from taking shrooms non stop or just get extremely sick and need to go to the hospital.

I was under the impresion that Shrooms are nontoxic. Smater o fact from what I understand psilocybin is already present in yer brain. I remember readin somewhere that some reserch sugests that the psilocybin present in our brains wasnt there alla time. Some Folks think it got there from eatin Shrooms and it remained in our brains from theron, in other words from themtimes forward, humans started bein born with the psilocybin in our brains, like it came from the Shrooms and then stuk there. I think they had, and has alot to do with human development. -but I shure dont think theyr toxic. They dont even have an od level do they? Psilocybin's a bit like THC in the respect that its nontoxic and has no od level, aint it?

    What?

The term is LD-50, I haven't heard about one for psilocybin, or LSD, mescaline or THC for that matter.

So what about the mushrooms that you buy at the store and use in salads and other things? Why are mushrooms fryed and then eaten? Wait, it's coming...almost there....oh yeah, because they're NOT HARMFUL. Some species of mushroom are poisionous to the human body and some of those even look like the "fun" mushrooms. But just because your mental state is changed doesn't mean that something is attacking you. And as far as the nausea is concerned, it's from all that plant matter sitting in your stomach. Psilocybin in it's pure form is almost exactly the same as LSD, checmically and from the perspective of the person injesting the drug. Whether or not you throw up depends on how strong YOUR stomach is, as well as what you've eaten prior to taking the mushrooms.

Good god kid, use your freakin head.

what is the accepted LD50 in humans?

what are you basing your claims on? throwing up?

women throw up when they're pregnant, does that mean a fetus is toxic?

2ces..I've read of psilocybin's "intoxicating effects" (boy are those fun), but I've never read of neurotoxic effects, contrary to substances such as MDMA. I think it's safe to say a person would probably purge before ingesting enough shrooms to actually die from it. Even Dr. Andrew Weil has mentioned psilocybin's low toxicity. Propaganda is certainly likely, as it has always been with cannabis.

psilocybin's phosphoryloxy group probably breaks off during metabolism, leaving ta-da... dimethyltryptamine; dmt isn't toxic at all. psilocin and psilocybin are so closely related to serotonin, it's not even funny.

shrooms actively fight being eating, the trip is proof of that. when you trip on em, you are engaging in war on a lesser life form.

    lesser life form?

hardly. fungi and microbes are at the top of the food chain, they thrive on decay.

Yea they don't say neurotoxic, they just say a sentence like "The main toxin of stropharia cubensis is psilocybin" or some shit like that. They use the word toxin on purpose to deter people from eating them and to spread misinformation. My wacked out theory I guess, but I can't see any other reason why they would use the word toxin.
