"A 13-year-old girl who told Zion police she was raped by seven boys in an apartment complex laundry room last month has recanted her original statement that she was forced to engage in the sexual activity.

Authorities are only pursuing charges against the eldest boy involved, who at 17 can be prosecuted as an adult for having sexual contact with a minor, Zion Police Chief Doug Malcolm said in a statement.

No other charges will be filed. The youngest boy linked to the April 19 incident in the 2600 block of Gabriel Avenue is 12.

The boys were interviewed separately and described in detail the consensual sexual acts and denied any use of force, police said. Physical evidence also showed there was no coercion, according to Malcolm."

While I think that 13 is waaaay too young to be engaging in sexual relations, charging a 17 year old with statutory rape that will probably brand him a sexual predator for life is repugnant. Statuatory rape laws are meant to protect young kids and teens from being preyed upon by adults. This kid is probably still in high school. It's not like he murdered someone, he just had sex. (so he says)

Okay as I read the article it was several boys and one girl alone in a laundry room and that they raped her? No matter the age of the victim or the perps, its wrong. As for charging a 17yr old as an adult for that crime, its kinda messed up in a way, I mean he is a minor infact himself so buy bumping him forward to the age of an adult it make the crime take on a different meaning. I mean if a 13 yr old raped a 13 yr old and was tried as an adult then he would/ she would be tried for an age difference related crime but there was no age difference. What if the rapist was younger than the victim, hmm kinda messed up then. You would plant the rapist into a crime that actual is not quite correct. I think this whole rape shit is kinda messed up anyway. I mean rape is violent to me, this she is 15 he was 18 shit or whatever is crap, if she consented then its not rape its like something else. If its a sexual crime against a child say under 14 ish (god knows what an age should be) but mine is an example then the crime should be something else like fucking up a childs life or something and if violence was involved too then it should be like death sentence no chance to live. It is just a technicality and all but yeah advancing the age of a minor to try then as an adult for any crime is kinda wrong, then one should be able to get out of a crime say if they are 20 and buy booze, I mean bump it backwards, or if 18 then bump it backwards, its all crazy when you begin to select variances to laws at random will. I never started that part of the thread but the other boys are just as guilty, they know right is right and wrong is wrong, and again changing the status of a person just to inflict more onto them is wrong. He is under age, he is not an adult yet. Would you want to be tried for something you technically did not qualify for? He did what he did but not as an adult he is by definition a minor still, no voting rights ect, still held under his parents care. How can you select when you desire to change his status?

 

your making it an emotional stand and law is not suppose to be based on emotions but rules. Again Im with ya, Id kill em all if it was my kid it had happend to, Im just kinda unhappy that a person can have thier age status changed on a whim of the courts to inflict more punishment is all. That is my only issue, the crime is not the issue to me at this point, it would not matter what a person did, it seems wrong to change thier age or what ever they desire to change.

I never said I thought it was ok for a 17 year to have sex with a 13 year old(though I was 14 with a 17 1/2 year old boyfriend..we dated for 2 years)

However, you cannot just charge a minor with an adult crime like that. Either a 17 year old is an adult and subject to ALL the laws and responsibilities of an adult or he is a minor and treated as such.

You can't just make exceptions when you(as a prosecutor) feel like charging someone with something for whatever reason.
