Hey everyone! I've been faced with a new growing environment at the house i'm about to move into. I'm moving to Asheville, (NC) and my new place is completely shaded which totally sucks. I also haven't been able to determine the soil condition, since i've only seen the property once. The grass looked pretty sparse and patchy though. I'm used to copious sunshine and rich soil and the ability to grow just about every veggie and flower i want. I've never really grown anything in the shade, any suggestions? i know i can look it up somewhere but it's always good to have personal success stories to back it up. thanks so much for any advice!:)

You can contact the agricultural department of Virginia Tech, they will send you sample boxes for your soil. Send them a few samples, they will give you an analysis, then someone at a full service garden center can tell you what to add to the soil.

As for shade plants, I like astible (sp) they are gorgeous. Many varieties of hosta and fern are also shade loving. Many plants do okay with only partial sun.

Will they let you cut some trees down?
