I have thought about that myself. Whereas, I am apart of the hippie trend, and I try to be a pacifist, I have gone through and still am going through a few anger issues. I've acted vengefully towards others. I've gotten into fights. I've yelled insults and put downs, in anger to others who have put me down.

But I feel that, maybe hippies (to the slightest definition of the word), aren't always pacifists. After all we still are human, and humans are entitled to a bit of anger, once in a while, no matter how pacifistic you might be. To me, the definition of a hippie, is somebody who lives their own life, the way they want to. But the life is always a happy one.

The whole stereotypical tie-dyed, Grateful Dead/Phish loving, pot-smoking, vegetarian, pacifist view of hippies, is simply just the most popular choices that self-defined 'hippies' have done. But as I had mentioned earlier, I am trying to be a pacifistic person, because I see everyday at high school, people picking on those who look or act differently (myself included). And so many people offer me out, but I refuse, because violence is not the answer.

I've figured out a long time ago, you don't have to put anybody else down to get ahead. I don't even feel that I need to get ahead, because getting ahead is not my priority any more. I just want to live life, happily. But some people still feel that they have to keep the freaks in line. I don't believe that. Never have, Never will. Nobody needs to be 'kept in line', because honestly there is no line to be kept in, in the first place. That's where pacifism comes in. There are other ways to be happy, and being yourself is the key.

So to sum up everything that I have said, in one word...

    !PEACE!

Guess I could have checked on this thread earlier. Oops, my bad.

To clarify, by militant, I did not mean blowing things up and assassinating Bush. Although I would consider ELF militant hippies and they do occasionally blow stuff up.

By militant I guess I meant belligerant and aggressive. Proactive rather than inactive. Aggressively persuing your agendas, against the efforts of those who disagree with you. Willing to argue with a stranger because you believe they are wrong. Willing to break the rules and fly in the face of convention.

In my mind, pacifism is usually associated with a "live and let live" attitude. Inaction rather than conflict. Yes, there are proactive examples of pacifism. But while they may not involve violence, they are most certainly aggressive.

As hippy is a term that is ussually applied to oneself, every one who calls themselves a hippy sets their own definition for themselves. Therefor it isn't correct to make blanket statements about what a hippy IS. That is forcing your definition on some one else. I was merely curious how many people that think of themselves as hippies, thought like I do.

    Keep the replies coming.

I prefer to call myself a 'Liberal pacifist', this means I would not join a war or kill anyone nor will I hurt maim or torture anyone. However if I was started on I could waive my pacifism and beat them as best I could.

I still call myself a hippie, but I change some days. One day I'll be against war and fighting and all that, and the next I'll be believing in war, chaos, distruction and disorder....

I don't know if militant is the word you're looking for the express the idea of a hippy who may not identify with an ideal pacifist... I would rather say that the particular hippy is aggresive and perhaps more emotionally dissheveled instead of saying she/he is militant. I mean, there are those of us who wouldn't think twice to smack the fuck out of someone who openly supported the Bush admin and the war in Iraq, but at the same time I'm sure there are also those of us who would splooge our pants at the very thought of "hot-boxing the nation," as was suggested earlier. I'd be down with that conspiracy, and sure, I'd fuck a fool up for tryin' to take me down when I'm not causing any harm. See... I'd do some harm to someone if they did it first, call me weak or whatever, but I'll send you home with your tail between your legs if you're gonna fuck with me on a physical level... hell, I'll even let most shit slide until you hit me in the face on purpose... you hit my cheek, and i'll hit ya right back... you keep on, and you'll be in a foot race with a 40 caliber hollow point. On the other hand, do I think that violence solves anything? Sure... it solves dumbassness and over-population, and if you don't have a job, it cuts down on unemployment... hell, even i'm fair game if that's a factor! Do I think it's necessary tho? No, and I don't really care for it. The war in Iraq, the bullshit with the WMDs that everyone else apparently has.... I don't support it, nor do I approve of making those in the first place. If I had my way, we'd just take them all apart and skin the makers/sellers/buyers and make a huge tent to house the homeless under right next door to the capital. Ol' W's skin could be made special so that his asshole was stretched over the entrance so that all the poor could see what a huge asshole Bush really is. Maybe we need revise sex ed in order to educate future voters that a Bush is the same thing as an asshole, and either way there's a 50/50 chance that there's gonna be a Dick right next to it. I'm a militant hippy I guess, but I still wish for peace over violence any day.

Hm, often other people call me a hippie 'cause I walk barefoot all the time and like some hippie things, & since I like some hippie stuff I like to hang out here in the forums, but this is one of the reasons I don't call myself a hippie... I'm not 100% pacifist. I don't support the war in Iraq, I *really* hope they won't be crazy enough to attack Iran or anything, but I supported Afghanistan & the first gulf war (they should've carried on & kicked Saddam out back then, would've saved soooooo much trouble!). I used to be a pacifist back in high school, but I later decided there were times when it's not good enough to just stand by and let one person beat up another, or one country beat up another...

  13. if I can find 500 people to pacify with me I will be a pacifisy, it works wonderfully in groups and you have a good life expectancy, if I am standing alone and the whole world has gone sideways I fully intend to be able to survive with my wit, my body and yes if nescesary a large arsenal of weapons, I really don't ever want it to reach that point, but if I'm going to be a martyr I'm at least going to at least dent those of opposing views forces.

Give me a hippie who supports Bush and I'll give you a contradiction.
