I am not trying to start a war or nothing but I was just wondering why you guys decided to be a vegetarian in the first place, like other animals eat other animals (lions > zebras etc...) I was just curious

oh and whats the different kinds of vegs and their differances (veg, vegan etc...)

    Thanks

I chose to be one because I have different options available being a human. Lions it other animals because they need to survive. People in Europe and America and whatnot usually eat meat because they taste good. If I was starving to death, you better believe I'd eat meat. Hell, if I'm starving enough, I'd probably eat you. But I'm not. If I have the choice not to eat meat, I'm going to take it because it's the right thing to do.

I don't do it for ethical or moral reasons.... mostly just health reasons, even though it all started with an awful story about a pet goat. :( You're just healthier when you don't eat meat, so I don't, but if I mess up and eat something that has meat in it, I don't freak out and get all guilty. Some folks might think I should....but I don't. But it's very good for you, no matter what reason you do it for.

My reason is because (like feministhippy said) I have an option. I dont need it to survive and so I dont feel it is nessecary to eat animals. I feel that their lives are just is important as ours and with that said, another reason is factory farming. It is just discusting and I dont want to be a part of it. (although I suppose I will be untill I become vegan....Im on my way:))
So the difference between a veg and a vegan.....well, veggies dont eat any meat at all...vegans dont eat meat as well as any animal by products...milk, cheese, gelitan, they dont use leather or wear wool, or use animal tested products, etc. Are you thinking of becoming a veg?

because lions go out and catch their prey and they have just an equal chance of dying, they don't pen them up and forcefeed them growth hormones and slaughter their offspring and put them in cans.

    animals kill.
    people murder.
the difference is that we have the capability to understand the consequences of our actions and make an informed choice. so whether a person is vegetarian for animal rights, health reasons, or percieved social/environmental responsibility, the comparison of us to animals isn't really relevant. we can choose, they can't.

I used to have a goldfish named Caspian. It just stuck me as utterly illogically that I could love him yet eat salmon or whatever. They're pretty much the same species. Then just extended that thinking to animals.

Initially my gripe wasn't with meat per say, but the horrific conditions of slaughter houses, the enviromental destruction caused by raising animals for 'food'. Health benefits weren't really a factor (nice I guess, but not a great concern)

Then I just got to the point when I just couldn't bring myself to eat meat. A year on and the lifestyle is so much a part of my thinking it's not an issue.

Yeah, I am actually learning towards being a veggie but I don't know about not eating dairy or buying animals products yet (I don't eat that much meat anyway)

That's good start, hope you follow it though. Feel free to ask any futher questions.

Vegetarian = doesn't eat meat (or fish, yup that's an animal) or slaughter house by products eg gelatin
    variations on the theme....
Ovo-lacto vegetarian = eats eggs & dairy (the most common kind)
Ovo-vegetarian = eats eggs but avoids dairy.
    Lacto-vegetarian = vice versa
Vegan = doesn't eat any animal products (eggs, dairy, honey etc)

Veg = short hand for vegetarian/vegan
Veg*an = variation of the above.

The only reason I say that, is not to pick on you, but is my usual reply when someone asks me why I am a vegetarian. I rhetort back "Well, why are you a meat-eater?" They reguarly become stumped and say "I don't know" definately makes them think (LOL)!

Good point, I do that too. Never in an attempt to 'win' anything, just in an attempt to get them thinking.
It's rather worrying how people can do something without every questioning or thinking about it.

there are also pollo and pesco vegetarians (although i hestitate to use the V word to describe them.)
pollo vegetarians still eat poultry and pesco vegetarians still eat fish.
people usually go pollo or pesco as a health thing. apparently the saturated fat in red meat is the satan of foodstuffs.
fruitarians are another sort. They eat only raw fruit, grains and legumes and beans.

I said this in an earlier post but yes people who might still eat fish usually is for health things because there are certain amino acids and fatty acids most generally found in fish, but what most I've found don't realize is that it can be supplement through flax seed oil and some cereals have it in them as a supplement.

no, flax seed, soya been walnut ect dont contain omega 3 fatty acids, they contain alpha-linolenic acid (LNA or ALA) which become omega 3 in the body, but my body cant do this. i found this out when i collapsed at school, doc's did lots of tests on me & found that my body dosent produce the enzimes to turn ALA into omega3.

In the beginning, I decided to become vegetarian to help reduce animal suffering in my diet. Quickly I learned of the health and environment degradation of eating animal products. Those are my main reasons. Plus, it freaks people out and it's kind of funny. "What, you don't eat meat or milk or eggs? You're gonna die!"
