Looks like it might finally happen!

Congress is going to block the Hip Forums (and probably Hippy.com as well - an excellent educational resource) from Schools and Libraries across America.

    http://www.washtimes.com/upi/20060511-114314-2665r.htm

The legislation is aimed at sites like MySpace.com, but it will probably affect us as well.

Sorry Kids, no more Free Speech for you at school or in Libraries. They don't want kids hearing anything but the lies the gov't brainwashes into them or the ignorance of their own peers.

Do I hear the bleating of Sheep across America?

    Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Of course EVERYONE COULD write their congressman and tell them how they feel about this censorship of a FREE SPEECH site, before it happens. Cause if you wait it will be TOO LATE.

    man thats fucked
    your government sucks
they do it such a way that its for our own good
"Sites like MySpace and Facebook have opened the door to a new online community of social networks between friends, students and colleagues," Fitzpatrick said. "However, this new technology has become a feeding ground for child predators that use these sites as just another way to do our children harm."

Skip I think you are blowing this a little out of proportion. First of all, there is content on this site that minors should not be reading. Second, from what I gathered from the brief article on the proposed bill, its intent is not to oppress free speech but to prevent minors from accessing sites that are infested with child predators. Myspace and Facebook are like a fucking plague in schools and on campuses. If keeping these sites out of schools will prevent 14-18 year old girls from being preyed on, then I believe it is a good idea.

If you think about it, free speech has always been restricted in schools. When have you ever been able to read material that is available on this site in any school? Imagine walking into a public middle school library and reading a book on how to grow marijuana, how much fun it is to trip on acid, where to buy spore syringes, how to get fucked in the ass, sucking a dogs dick, who would fuck their sister, etc..... These are all topics on this site that anybody, anywhere, at any age can read. You wouldn't be able to read this stuff in a book, so why should you be able to read it off of a computer screen? Don't get me wrong, I think sites like Hipforums, Myspace, and Facebook are excellent. On the other hand, I also believe that it is the responsibility of the school to protect that students while they are on the property, and that includes protecting them from information that is illegal and may be harmful to the well-being of the students.

    Absolutely Libertine!
Ultimately those of us "in the know" realize that this will happen. Communications is a huge money flow and these vipers seated at the top of the jungle need to constrict a wee bit tighter in order for the life to flow from one vessel to the other. Literally squeezing the life from us. However I will quit with the metaphor and remind you that modern communication has not been with us for that long in retrospect to the human species which has occupied this planet for millenia. Grassroots action is where it grows strongest. To lazy and so called efficient is the way of the new communications. Don't get me wrong I believe it is a wonderful educational tool! I just believe if we get together more often, one on one, live in person in public forum the more we can accomplish. After all that has got us to this point so far, we just got duped into believing a new order of things.

Last night I went and sat in on a public session for this very fight with members of my community and the local broadband, cable and communicatons carrier for this region. There wasn't many people there and it was a little distressing however those who got up and spoke so eloquently for the fight at hand empowered me even more.

    Never lose hope.

Lemme get this straight, you're saying that information itself is ILLEGAL??? That information itself is HARMFUL?

What planet or dictatorship are you living in? Have you been brainwashed or what?

And why are schools and parents NOT TEACHING children how to identify and avoid online predators? What is so hard about that? That should be BASIC TRAINING BEFORE kids even browse the Internet for the first time!

They're taught not to talk to strangers in real life, aren't they?

You can't shield kids from the facts of life forever. They MUST find these things out, and online is SAFER than in real life.

Should the first time a child learns about drugs be from some other young kid who steals pills from his parent's medicine cabinet? Or from some drug pusher at school?

All studies indicate that children who are provided with information from both sides of these issues are much more able to make informed choices than those who are sheltered (censored) or only hear one side.

Do you think children are STUPID? They will be if you treat them like they are!

If a 14 year old and up doesn't know (after at least 8 YEARS OF BEING ONLINE), how to identify and avoid a molester, then someone hasn't done a good job raising and supervising the kid. Don't blame sites like this.

Besides, this is an INTERNATIONAL site, and not all countries hide such information from children. Many expose children to this shit at early ages so they LEARN how to deal with it, without becoming "victimized".

Schools have an obligation to teach kids safe internet browsing just like they do safe sex.

Don't come here and preach morality, cause it doesn't transend cultural and national boundaries in most cases.

Don't let the government pull that protect the children bullshit. They are the ones who want our children starting at the age of 5 to be psychologically tested twice a year for mental/learning disorders so they can be medicated properly as a part of their schooling whether the are public, private, charter or home. And to boot without parents permission.

It's basic like potty training. You don't want kids getting shit all over themselves do ya?

Problem is too many parents see the Internet as their online baby sitters. As long as their kids are online, they don't need to waste their time with them, esp. by supervising what they're doing!

Like banning the sites from schools is REALLY gonna make a difference anyway!

Cellphone Internet browsing will be ubiquitous in the next couple of years, so kids can easily bypass such restrictions (unless the parents censor their cellphones!)
