I am wanting to become a vegetarian. The main reason is my health. Frankly right now it sucks. I was diagnosted with MS about 3 years ago and have had the symptoms for about 8 years. Here is the big catcher. I read a book by Kevin Trudeau and started doing the cleanses (organic) and shocker my symptoms started disappearing. Right now I do not have one single symptom of MS at all. All my life I have been the jerk who wrote off being a vegetarian for the weird people. Now I am finding out that not only is it healthy but it can cure some deseases. For all I have done in the past I am a tard. Now here is where I need help. I really want to give this life style a go. I don't want to experience the pain that I used to go through again.

For the past 2 weeks I have been a vegetarian and would like some advice. I know nothing about the lifestyle and the eating habits. I need help from the very beginning. Please help me.

Kevin Trudeau! i love him. i'm reading his book right now too.

i've been a vegetarian for... probably at least five or six years. it's definately extremely healthy, and i can't even imagine wanting to eat something that once had a heart and a brain...

first off, get yourself some vitamins! get as many different kinds of dietary supplements as you can. you need calcium and protein especially, since most people get those from dairy and meat. get tons of vegetables, even those weird ones you never noticed before. the microwaveable imitation meat things aren't very good, except for garden burgers and imitation ribs. don't waste your money. eat lots of brown rice, and different kinds of beans. lots of tea, and maybe buy a juicer. i hate when people say they want to be a vegetarian, but there's nothing to eat. there are so many choices. you just may have never heard of them before. things like cous cous and falafels and hummus. if you see something in the grocery store, check the ingredients, and if you can recognize most of them and there aren't any animal products, try it and see if you like it.

good luck with your health, i hope your diet change helps. i think it will :).

Something thats been pivotal for me has been learning to cook 'world food', in my case Indian and SE asian dishses. Indian cuisine is arguably the greatest vegetarian food on the planet. Thai veggie food is probably equal.
Buy a couple of books on both cuisines, buy a wok and get cooking! You'll be surprised how fairly straight forward it is to make dishes. You'll also open up a whole new world for your taste buds! And no it's not expensive! You'll probably be spending less than when you ate meat.

I have already given up all the meats I used to eat. I guess its a good thing I love food from around the world because that will add flavor to my life. I hate the idea of eatting salad all the time. I am glad to hear that there are other options. To tell you the truth I could eat falafels all the time. They are one of the best tasting foods.

Is it true that cooking olive oil turns it into poisons? I have heard that from many family members but they are all fat meateaters that are so unhealthy. even after having heart attacks they still refuse to start eatting healthy. See I do have the holier then thou attitude...hehe

I have no problem with meat. I was only kidding. Since we are on the topic let me add this. Red meat and stuff may taste good but there are so many toxins in it these days that people are getting all kinds of deseases. You know who profits from that? The pharmacy companies. They keep pumping people full of their toxins in the form of medication and they have no basis for giving the drugs to us. They have not cured a single desease since polio in the 50's. The main reason that was cured was because the researchers wife came down with it. Those who like to eat meat, I don't have a problem with. More power to them. I used to be a huge beef eatter and now I am paying the consequence of my actions.

to the OP, welcome. Not everyone on HF is a, to quote, "ass."
While I have great reservations on Trudeau, I guess if he brings people to questioning what they've done, there could be a value.
read our FAQ and look for newbie sorts of postings. We've cevered a lot of this ground.
Are you looking to go cold turkey or stage down?
    where are you now?
In Waco what are your shopping alternatives? Did Whole Foods (sometimes called Whole Paycheck) get a site?
Look for co-ops, and small natural health stores. Fort Worth has outlets of Sunflower Shoppe (not the same Sunflower as NM, Colo And Ariz) which are OK.
MAny imitations are in mainstream grocery stores. I recently stubled over Steak Strips by Morningstar Farms. Not a perfect solution, but when you HAVE to have a fajita....

    You can do this.
In 1980, I ate my last hamberger in Weatherford, Texas. I was 13. I lived in texas for many more years, then hoped north one state for about a decade. (I left to live in other countries for several month segmants during that time) Now I'm in Colorado, another cow state.

Eat whole foods, whole grains and limit the fats and sweets that stopping meat might cause cravings for.
If you stuble, that's Ok start again. We all fell a lot learning to walk. You are now learning to walk a new path.

actualy I have already spent the last two weeks as a vegetarian. I am noticing that over the last 6 weeks I really started disliking meat and sugars. I am more of the organic type too. There are a few restraunts here that have organic vegetables and fruits. There is no whole foods here in waco but HEB (grocery store) expanded their store to carry more organic foods. I currently live by the 60% carb 20% protein 20% fat. I have heard of horror stories about how a persons red blood count got too low and had a heart attack. This is something I want to avoid obviously but I know that there is a way to keep that from happening by eatting certain foods that have the right amino acids. I will definately read that faq. thanks for the help.

    Fantastic!
I was diagnosed with MS a couple of years ago- classic symptoms. My grandmother started really researching it-a nutritionist and physical therapist- and I changed my diet even further. Not only veggie, but really watching my fats, etc.
Even though I'll have a 'spell' as you know happens, I haven't had a significant event in over a year.
    Woohoo!
PM me with any questions, and I suggest, although some of his theories scare a lot of people, including me, you read Dr.Mercola, or at least peruse his site.
    Blessings upon blessings,

The funny thing is that I don't have those events. I mostly suffer from pain and weakness. The weakness could be caused by a lazy attitude once I was diagnosted with it. It is quite possible that he was full of hot air and just wanted the kickback from another person willing to inject themselves with toxins. But I also don't want to take the chance at being wrong.

The drawbacks from MS' interferon drugs outweigh so many benefits. You are not tired, or suffer from sore legs all month anymore, but you do get to enojy flu symptoms for a week at a time, open wounds at injection site, etc.
I took the chance at being wrong. The diet is a much more peacable and succesful road for me.

I agree with that thought pattern. I also refuse to take any of the injections. I perfer the diet route. I like the control being in my court and not in theirs. I am also overwhelmed by the support I get from people everyday saying that they think I am doing something better for my body. Tonight I made a very yummy stir fry that was better then any meal made with meat. Tonight the wife came forward and said that she is also going to follow me down this road. That was huge for me. btw just in case I came accross wrong the part of not being wrong....I meant I did not want to keep going through life acting like I don't have it. I want to live life understanding that it might be true and to take the right steps in overcoming it organically and naturally.

Good for you! We don't always have to have a name for everything, but self-deception is never okay. I know what that means, finally having to say " alrighty, I am sick, and need to take acountability for implementing self-healing ways."
That's huge. God bless you and your family.
This way, you'll also be saving about $10K a month in meds, I know you already know, but many who don't know about MS don't.

I am so happy with the progress of my healing. The only symptom that I have is the pain in my joints. Even though I still have that, its reduced to the point where I don't mind if that is what I have to live with for the rest of my life. The doctor was nice enough to give me the choice of a daily or weekly injection. Boy was he supprised when I told him neither and that I will heal myself. It was rather funny. I told him that if I did end up healthy that I would sue him for malpractice. Of course I will not but I wanted him to stop talking. Funny thing is that I did the atkins diet for a while thinking it was good for me. Boy was I wrong. I have never felt this good when I was on anyother diet.

to be fair, anecdotal evidence is basically worthless.
