Foreign policies of US, Al Qaeda are alike, says Chomsky

BEIRUT — In a blistering attack on the US, Noam Chomsky, the internationally esteemed academic, scholar and anti-Israel activist, said the current US administration’s foreign policy is no different from that of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in terms of punishing people. In his debut trip to Beirut, the anti-US and anti-Israel thinker delivered an in-depth lecture at the American University of Beirut, which was packed by hundreds of intellectuals, academics, researchers, educators, and dignitaries who flocked to hear his frank, daring views about US policies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Cuba, Indonesia, Yugoslavia and Palestine. He said the US is penalising the Palestinian people for electing Hamas to power. In the view of Washington, the Palestinians deserve the suffering for bringing Hamas to the helm of power. “They will be taken hostage and punished, until they elect a government obedient to imperialism.” Chomsky has been one of the harshest critics of United States foreign policy, and his latest book ‘Failed States’ is no exception. In his lecture about ‘The Great Soul of Power’, Chomsky, a Professor of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, drew a parallel between the US foreign policy and that of Al Qaeda’s Bin Laden, saying Washington is castigating the Palestinians for electing Hamas, just as Bin Laden is chastising the Americans for wrongly choosing their administration. Chomsky, who was interrupted several times by the enthusiastic audience, questioned the US drive for fostering democracy around the world, while it is starving the Palestinians for exercising their democratic franchise. Chomsky told the gathering that it was not the first time that a US administration took punitive measures against the people of a country like what it did against Palestinians. “Washington,” he noted, “sieged the Cuban people when they elected Fidel Castro as president of Cuba. Washington held the view that the Cubans ought to bear the responsibility of their option.” He likened the US order to Iran not to interfere in Iraq’s affairs with that of Hitler when he told Britain not to interfere in occupied Europe. Chomsky also blasted the intellegentsia who fabricated stories in defence of the superpower rather than assuming their role of speaking out against it.
