After reading the 'Pet Peeves' thread, I thought I would start a thread about dube etiquette. There are very many rules and regulations to cover, and they vary greatly based on culture and region. I will only attempt to explain the rules that I've come to know and adhere to. Before I begin, I should define some of the terms I will use, though I'm sure they are familiar to many the circle: a common phrase used to describe the configuration and order that a dube is passed around the crowd. breaking the circle: changing the direction that the dube is passed, or trying to cut into a different position matching up: When several people in a crowd each have a stash, it is common courtesy for each person to match the others contribution to the session. missed: a person missed their toke for whatever reason. Once a toke is missed, a person does not have the right to break the circle. a miss: a miss is a minor penalty issued under the dube etiquette ordinance and denies a person their next toke in turn. CO'd: CUT OFF. Being CO'd is a serious penalty that results in a person being ommited from a circle or session. Possibly for the entire day. Possibly permanently. pinching: stealing from another persons stash middling: buying dope for another person cheech: a person who is stingy with their dope. Alternately, a person who is missed due to no fault of their own. bogart: one who smokes more than their fair share. (even if they are the contributor) Rule #1: Always burn one with your dealer after making a purchase. Reason: People showing up for 5 minutes and leaving looks very suspicious for your dealer, and will likely result in you having to find a new dealer when your old one gets busted because of your ignorant lack of consideration. Smoking one with your dealer also gives you the opportunity to sample it and decide if you will give it back or not. If you leave your dealers house with a bag, don't come crying back because it was parsley. Penalty: Failure to burn with your dealer will often result in a poor standing relationship (don't expect any good deals) and dissapointment in your purchases. Exceptions: Exceptions to this rule may occur on occasion when either party is in a hurry. It should always be an exception though. Not the norm. Rule #2: Always pass to the left. Reason: Stoned people are forgetful people, and trying to remember some specific order or which direction you passed in the first place always results in someone getting cheeched. If the dube is always passed to the left, there will never be confusion. Penalty: Breaking the circle will earn you a miss. Exceptions: It is generally never acceptable to break the circle. If a new person enters the circle, they should take the proper position to recieve next toke, or wait for their turn in the circle. A roller may break the circle on the first turn by passing to the person who contributed the weed. Rule #3: If someone breaks out their buds and you have your own, always match. Reason: Smoking someone elses stash and keeping yours in your pocket is beyond rude. Penalty: CO'd permanently. Exceptions: There is no exceptions to this rule. If you have dope in your pocket, and you intend to smoke someone elses, you better be matching up you cheech! Rule #4: Always share with everyone present. Reason: Common courtesy. Furthermore, most people will cave and let the outcast smoke. So just save yourself the temptation to pity the poor person and toke elsewhere. Penalty: Breaking this rule will often result in being permanently CO'd by other more considerate smokers who see you doing this. Shortage of stash is no excuse. If you don't have enough to share, don't light up. Exceptions: Large crowds and only one stash warrants the owner to elect a circle to smoke with, however those who will be ommited should be politely informed that they will get in on the next session. Rule #5: Never assume you are invited to smoke someone elses weed. Reason: It's just plain inconsiderate Penalty: CO'd from the circle or session, possibly for the day. Exceptions: There is no exception, even if you are usually the one who is normally burning, that does not give you the right to assume any privledges. If this is the case however, see Rule #4. Rule # 6: Never pinch if you middle for someone. Reason: Stealing is wrong. Go buy your own, thief. Penalty: CO'd permanently Exceptions: Never Rule #7: Always compensate someone who middles for you. Reason: This person took a risk by trafficing dope for you, it is only right to at LEAST smoke them up if you won't break off a decent bud for their troubles. Penalty: Don't expect that person to middle for you very often,. You may also be labelled as a cheech, and cheeches get CO'd. Exceptions: If you will smoke most of your stash with the person who middled for you, breaking off a bud for them should not be expected of you. Rule #8: Roller always gets to spark Reason: If it's your dope, and you want first toke, then you roll it. If you are too lazy or don't know how to roll, you relinquish sparking rights to the designated roller. If the roller is not the owner of the dope, the roller may break the circle to pass to the owner and they should then pass left. Rule #9: Never attempt to call dibs/shotgun. Reason: Smoking the chronic should be a peaceful and relaxing activity. Calling dibs raises negative excitement, is immature and indicates that you are a bogart. Implication by action, such as fighting for a spot in the circle also qualifies as 'calling dibs'. Just fall in to the circle and take what ya get. If everyone is respectful, you will all get a fairly equal share. Penalty: Anything from demotion in the order of the circle, to being CO'd Exceptions: There is no exception, calling turns is never required in mature and respectful company. Rule #10: No bogarting Reason: Everybody in the circle wants to get high as much as you do. They are just considerate enough to save some for you and everyone else too. Puff Puff Pass. No more. Penalty: Bogarts get a miss to compensate for their gluttony! Exceptions: There is no exception, even if it's your weed. If you want to smoke more than what you want to share, save some for yourself for when you are alone. ... I'll add more when I think of them. Now if I can just come up with a snazzy board and some playing peices we would have the makings of a challenging game of social grace and ritual persecution!
I would have to only partly agree with rule #1. Although I would happily toke with my dealer if he dealt out of his house, most dealers (around here) meet people at a prearranged location usually in a car. In a situation like that taking the time to toke looks more suspicious and is more likely to result in getting busted. Just an acception to the rule...
after reading the pet peeves thread... your next thing should have been searching for 1 of the 100's of etiquette threads that have already been posted!...
Where are these 100's of threads about it already J-Man? I did look and I found none. Even so, I'm sure there are, but again, I didn't find them, so I posted this thread. Besides, it's just something to talk about, if ya don't like it or if the topic bores you, then why are you responding?
That's true, rule #1 does apply to when you go to a dealers home. I wouldn't encourage people to buy from a dealer on the street, even if you know the person. If you do, then rule #1 doesn't apply. You can always invite the dealer to your home if they insist on meeting you. That gives you the chance to sample the wares, and looks less suspicious most of the time. I would just find another dealer. I prefer not to be associated with the dealer types that deliver. There is almost always heat around them. Notice the exception that being in a hurry should not be the normal. Rushing leads to mistakes, and mistakes get you busted.
there are some, but they are from forever ago.. its no big deal.. plus the other threads were just copied from erowid
Smoking herb should never be this difficult or require so much attention to particular "rules." Just pass the damn joint to the left, get high, kick back and mellow out.
Chillax. The rules are mostly unsaid and followed without effort. Some people lack consideration and experience, and in these cases it's nice to be able to comically refer to the unspoken rules. They serve practical purpose and are not just petty atempts to ritualize the process of smoking dope. The MJ experience should be relaxing and casual indeed, and these 'rules' help to manage that. I personally don't enjoy getting busted, or listening to people bicker about who gets a toke first, or sharing my dope with people who won't share with me. Mostly it's just common sense. Unfortunately some people need to be told. Furthermore, the whole concept of dube etiquette is meant to be taken in humour, not as a means of being anal retentive.
hey man, i liked them. made sense n made me laugh (i dont really know why ) i agree with pretty much all of them rules. i mean, sure, readin them out word for word would be a bit of a negative thing, but u say these rules casually and stick in some light humour, and it makes for a happy tokin' session.
i guess i generally agree with most of the ideas within that list, but it's not really that big a deal. my biggest pet peeves are people that have too many pet peeves about smoking, or like to rag on people. though that is a decent list.
honestly, alot of the stuff on here is bullshit. I could go on and on for hours about how much bullshit is on this site. But, since I dont have hours and hours to talk about this crap, ill just quote a paragraph, and then go ahead and break it down, since it hits me, close to home (and ill tell you why later) "Marijuana abuse also has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because it contains irritants and carcinogens9,11. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke12. It also induces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into their carcinogenic formÑlevels that may accelerate the changes that ultimately produce malignant cells13. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which increases the lungs' exposure to carcinogenic smoke. These facts suggest that, puff for puff, smoking marijuana may be more harmful to the lungs than smoking tobacco." Notice how alot of what they say is "has the potential to" or "may be" or "may accerlerate" There are alot of Maybes there, alot of, well, it could be. Its alot of bullshit. Why? They twist numbers around. They take statistics and manipulate them..... you may wonder, how so? Lets say, for a hypothetical, that Marijuana is, as they say, 50 to 70 more carcinogenic than Tobbaco. But guess what, it doesnt matter.. People who smoke cigs smoke ALOT more than people who smoke Weed. I personaly know alot of people who smoke a pack a day. I dont smoke cigs, so I dont know how many come in a pack, but lets say, you compare a pack a day smoker to a weed smoker. Lets say, as a hypothetical, that a pack of Cigs has 20 cig in it. And then lets also say, that about 1 joint = 2 cigs (we are being generous and talking about some fat Js) then, looking at the numbers, marijuana smoke is about 50% more carcinogenic than tobacco. So that about equals, 1 fat J = 3 cigs. So, do the math. 20 cigs = about 6 (I even rounded down) big fat joints a day How many people do you know, smoke 6 big joints a day? Even when I was smoking crappy stress weed, the MOST I ever smoked in one day, was about 4 joints worth.... So even on my biggest weed binge, I dont even come close to the ammount of carinogens that 1 pack of cigs does. You see... All these government sites show you all the bad stuff, they show you all the worst case scenarios and all the shit that could MAYBE happen. You know why this artical struck me? Its cause I have asthma. Its cause I need to use an inhaler and I even ended up in the hospital for four whole days because of my asthma. In fact, its been a little over a month since I have been out. Honestly, if my asthma was much worse that day it got really bad, I could have died... and im being totaly serious. The day I got out of the hospital, I blazed, and I have smoked weed almost every day since I have been out. And every time I have gone in for a check up with my respritory doctor, he has said "im doing amazing" a week after I got my first check up, he said "You sound like a new man" (his words, not mine) But my little secret is that I blazed every single day after I got out of the hospital till I got my first checkup.sooo fucking true!!
