There is always a lot of talk about what it means to be a hippie, who is really a hippie, are there real hippies around anymore, etc., etc. So then people are trying to define what a hippies is, which is like trying to see the wind. All of this got me to thinking. To me, a hippie is a lot of things (of which I am not going to go into now,) but I've always thought of hippies as being pacifistic, or at least would be the ideal. Others disagree. Which brings me to my point: What does pacifism mean to you? Dose a hippie have to be a pacifist? Peace, -Ana
imho, I think hippies are pacifists. Or, they try their hardest to be so. I mean, people do get angry by nature, but they try their hardest to be.
to me pacifism means that you won't fight over anything, no matter how bad it bothers you. im this way, and ive always thought it was a given that if you considered yourself a hippie you had to be pacifist. what kind of hippie gets in fights?
This thread reminds me of Walter in the Big Lebowski, ' I dabbled a bit in pacifism, not in Nam of course'
pacifism is deffentily a hippy trait. i am very pacificistic about everything...but i still dont let people order me around ...im to lazy to do anything people ask me to do
Are we talking about not pursuing violence, or avoiding all fights of all kinds? I am never a violent person... well almost never... but I can't say I never fight with people. I don't mean arguing, there's a big difference. I very rarely go into something with the intention of hurting the other person, but I can think of a few times when I have felt like that. It's odd that pacifism is usually just referred to considering physical violence, but we generally ignore the worse act of hurting eachother mentally and emotionally, you know? really, what is more important.
I'm not a hippie, and I'm a Kickboxer... so I think that automatically disqualifies me from being a passificist. Whatever.
I'm not certain of that. I mean, probably in the purest sense of the word it would, but there is a world of difference in a sport and training where there is mutual agreement to what will take place, and just plain kicking someone's ass. Peace, -Ana
i'm generally a pacified person, meaning i will try to avoid confrontation, when i can, but when push comes to shove, i rarely state my case verbally....meaning i don't care to fight if i have to, and will not let anyone violate me or my spcae...or disrespect me or someone i care about......but i still consider myself semi-pacifist.....
I think most hippies are pacifists (I'm not sure if I'd go as far as saying hippies have to be "pacifists"). I'm not sure if I'd consider myself if a pacifist (I oppose war and the death penalty, but one of my guilty pleasures is enjoying, on occasion, a good boxing match), but I don't see pacifism as a bad thing.
I feel "hippy" is much more inclusive than just the pacifists. To me being a hippy is about feeling at home within a social group, identifying with the members. Think of all the people you find associated with hippies that don't fit a stereotypical definition. punks, goths, street kids, pagans, environmentalists, protesters, etc You wouldn't say they all have to be pacifists. Many of those people identify with the words "hippy" Too many people try to turn "hippy" into another exclusionary clique. Telling other people what a hippy is and expecting them to conform to that definition. That ain't right.
i always taught of pascifism as a beleif where u would never hit or try to hurt any1 unless they try to do something to your family thats when you would react..i dont that's what teachers have told me...but im not a violent person so i wouldnt know if i was a pascifist... PEACE and LOVE
i like to think of myself as a pacifist, but i also have nothing against fighting cops, or taking part in a riot that is for a good cause, or vandalizing public property. eh, whatever
I've played hockey for years and I love to throw down the gloves. But afterwards there's never any hard feelings. You go out and buy the guy a beer and laugh about it. Most hockey players I've known have been very pacifistic off the ice. I've never even thrown a punch on dry land.
I don't think that hippies need to be pacifist. that just may be an identifying trait with hippies b/c of the riots and such. personally i'm not a violent person.
off course picking a fight is wrong, but its just dumb to be a pacifist. you have to defend yourself and sometimes that means you have to be ready to brawl. its survuval of the fittest, its part of nature to fight. would it have been right to sit by during ww2 and let hitler murder more jews.
