I had a question regarding the way my father was treated when he returned from vietnam. I'll start this of saying I am a hippy today...and he will never approve. When he got off the plane from Vietnam he was grabbed by a "hippy" althought he seemd to violent to be a hippy lol, and pushed up against the wall. He grabed his navy cross (yep corpsman can get em too), purple heart, silver star, and ripped off his sargents stripes all along calling him a baby killer and a sinner. I was just wondering why someone would do that to a person who was just doing what he was forced to do? My father wanted to get involved in politics, to help stop wars like that disater from ever happening again so he couldn't skip out on duty or he would never convince the conseratives to vote for him. So why would we in the past have done that to someone, just a ssume he was some war hungry facist when he could have been a peace loving citizen.....he still cant talk about what he had done...it really bothers him...just wondering why someone would do that. Because I don't aggre with the current situation in Iraq dosn't mean I am going to hurt those just doing what our government needs them to do....I look at them and thank them for doing a job tha, sadly according to our government, is necessary and keeping me from having to do it...why didn't you guys take that approach? Sorry to babble but the the screen didn't stop moving...lol...ow fingers hurt. Peace Al P.s sorry to babbly on
is it possibly because many of the men of that era generalize and clump anyone differently clothed, different political train of thought, long hair etc etc as a hippie???? not really understanding or knowin too awful much about the whole summer of luv n all that because they were in the services...... n not paying a whole lot of attention to what was actually transpiring in the states.... on the flip side alot of rainbow folk are vietnam vets just goes to show us how many variations of the word hippie there truly are within this country alone...
You believe that? Sorry I find it very hard to believe. Cause when these guys came back, there were usually a lot of them coming off the planes (which many times landed in military bases), so a lone "hippie" approaching one and doing that would probably get his ass kicked. Did your dad say what he did to the "hippie" after that was done to him? He just let him do that? He didn't even try to move away? Come on, use your head! Almost ALL of the actions taken by protesters happened at RECRUITING stations, not at random airports upon soldiers return. This is an urban legend for the most part. I'm not saying there weren't a few who did experience negativity on their return, but Vietnam Vets were often at the FRONT of the protests, and they were respected by those who were active in the movement to stop the war. Many choose to forget or bury the truth! This is just the way many have sought to rewrite history and discredit those in the antiwar movement, which did eventually succeed in ending the war.
One more thing. I see you're from Ohio. Perhaps your dad can tell you about this.... If not I will. That is a dead student lying on the ground. He was from Kent State University. He was just protesting the war, quite peacefully, when a National Guardsman shot him down, along with 3 others that day. Shot him dead. Just a student, probably like you. 1970. Don't know when your dad got back, but if he returned to Ohio soon after that, ANYONE in a military uniform was not welcomed with open arms by students or war protesters. At that point it seemed it was us against them. And they were armed and killing us on the campuses and in the streets of America. Didn't need to go to 'Nam to die at the hands of a foreign enemy when the real enemy was right here in America. Guess what? They still are!
Whoa guys. Like I said before I follow what I was taught as a child by other family members, and I proudly proclaim myself to be a hippy. I frequent anti-war protests around here and hope to become very active in the movement....if we can ever get one up and running. I just wanted to make it clear that I was not an enemy trying to point a finger at those who followed similar prinicpals in the past, just wondering why they took a different approach. This did happen and yes my father tried to avoid any altercation with the person....mainly he says because he was afraid if he tried to fight back he would be shot/stabed/anyother type of serious harm. I do understand about the problems at Kent State, my girlfriends mother was taking part in a protest the time it occured. I guess I just don't understand. If "hippies" are about peace first and violence second, this one person again I am not trying to say all must have been very misled. Also I was taught to never judge anyone before you know them...another priniciple taught by my...lol..hippie teachers if I can call them that. I guess I just don't undertand why this person would go agaisnt everything the movement stood for, according to my aunt, and do something like this. Maybe it was just a crazy time in that persons life...looking to take out their anger on someone else. I do thank all of you for your feedback, and please don't take this post wrong, I am not accusing all hippies from that era. Also off subject of this post but if anyone could point me in the direction of an organization that puts together anti-war protest/demonstrations/or just need people to voulenteer I would greatly appriciate it. Peace, Al
they weren't all hippies. That wasn't the right thing to do,however it wasn't a big deal.i've also heard the same story told so many different ways,i tend not to believe it happened,at least not as often as the stories. Some of the vets were the biggest cry babies...
On Nov. 20, U.S. Marines spokesman Capt. Jeffrey Pool issued a statement saying that on the previous day a roadside bomb had killed 15 civilians and a Marine. In a later gunbattle, U.S. and Iraqi troops killed eight insurgents, he said. U.S. military officials later confirmed that the version of events was wrong. Murtha, a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, said at a news conference Wednesday that sources within the military have told him that an internal investigation will show that "there was no firefight, there was no IED (improvised explosive device) that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood." Military officials say Marine Corp photos taken immediately after the incident show many of the victims were shot at close range, in the head and chest, execution-style. One photo shows a mother and young child bent over on the floor as if in prayer, shot dead, said the officials, who spoke to NBC News on condition of anonymity because the investigation hasn't been completed. One military official says it appears the civilians
What? My Lai? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_massacre Another reason we weren't pleased with the Vets coming back from 'Nam...
Yes, we can now add Falluja and Abu Ghraib to America's Military's Finest Moments. You see you let someone like Bushit lead the country and you get the worst atrocities imaginable because ppl like Bushit just don't care about people who aren't rich white Americans. So what if we've killed many times the # of ppl who died on 9/11, people who had nothing to do with that event. People who were either defending their country or were just caught up in the crossfire. So what if more Americans have died in Iraq & Afghanistan than were killed on 9/11. Who cares? Soldiers are expendable, no? That is the attitude that still prevails today. Nothing has changed. Not a fucking thing. Just be glad your ass isn't getting drafted, DonVito. You gotta realize we were against the WHOLE system that creates these kinds of scenarios. In Chicago in 1968 there was a peaceful protest at the DNC that turned violent when SOLDIERS and police started beating up the protesters. They all had uniforms and guns. Again national guard and regular ARMY troops were on the streets of America ready to kill unarmed Americans expressing their right to free speech. Are you getting the picture yet? How many times do you need to see a man in uniform pointing a gun at you, waiting for the order to kill before you figure out that they're the enemy?
Yeah man, I see what you are saying, and thanks. I probally would have never seen it from that point of view. I guess you are right though...if you join the military (which my dad joined the navy only to avoid the army...lol..but ended up as a corps man for force recon while "choosing" to be a jet mechanic...ahhh beuracracy at its best) which is all voulenteer you must support the facist war machine. I really mean thank you man, you helped me realize that an all voulenteer army means you must support what our government is doing...at least at the time you join, but I still thank them for doing it and keeping me from doing it. I guess I am just a little more peacefull than the fellow who attacked my father. Hopefully that was the point you are trying to get across...if not please explain. Peace to everyone, Al
