Once again we see the effects of geoilpolitics on the poor people of the world. The whole genocide scenario in the Darfur region is nothing more than land clearing so oil exploration, I mean exploitation can occur. It seems the Sudan has been divied-up among a number of oil companies who see the native tribes people as being obstacles to their exploration. Like they were clearing nests of rats, they've bombed, raped & pillaged millions of tribespeople to get them off their land, which is the real goal. With the native people gone, not there to contest the ownership of their land, which is obviously being expropriated by their own government, their oil rights are sold to the highest bidder. This has been going on in the Sudan for many years. If you look at the map on this page you can see how much of the country has been sold down the road to oil companies. Numerous tribes have been displaced and as you can see one area that hasn't yet is Northern Darfur (Southern Darfur already has oil concessions). Coincidence? Of course not. http://www.hrw.org/reports/2003/sudan1103/2.htm Sudan's leadership is selling off rights held by tribes without permission and committing genocide to do it. It's good to see the world getting behind this, but one must question the motives now that the reality of the world's oil supply has finally filtered into to people's consciousness (but not conscience yet). Here's a very good review of the facts of life & death & oil in the Sudan http://www.hrw.org/reports/2003/sudan1103/ This is the price the world is paying so Americans & now Chinese can continue to consume ever more resources. (Note how many Chinese companies are involved in the Sudan!!!) So my question is... Why are governments & the world media downplaying the link between the genocide against these poor people and corrupt leaders and the oil companies? Geoilpolitics rule the world now.
BTW, I wondered how these supposed militia janjaweed sported all new automatic weapons. In fact in footage I saw everyone had shiny new weapons. They seemed like the best equipped group of mercenaries in Africa. So now it seems the OIL COMPANIES ARE HIRING MERCENARIES WHO ARE COMMITTING GENOCIDE ON A MASS SCALE! This is how it is in Africa today, people. This is how ruthless oil companies have become in the fight to get enough oil to meet the never slowing demand. Why join the US army when you can become a mercenary! Same risks, better pay!
Depressing but not surprising. I saw some evidence and heard stories of similar violations in Cameroon when I was there working in the late 90's. It seems the entire continent, particularly sub-Saharan, is being raped for their resources, oil in particular.
The genocide in Sudan is more about ethnic cleansing then oil. But maybe the west is responding slowly to this mass genocide because of the oil situation.
Skip. This is nothing new. The tribes of various continents have always been wiped out to exploit a resource or to simply "get rid of riffraff". The Celts and Schythians were wiped out for land, resources, and slavery. Various tribes in Africa and South America for precious metals. Tribes in Africa for diamonds and other stones. this ontop of the greed for land. it was only a matter of time until the greed for black gold led to killing off more indigenous tribes. The Inuit will be next in Alaska...the US government will have what's left of those people shipped in buses off to reservations in Montana. Does it make it right? Fuck no it doesnt make it right! I belong to a group that fights for the international protection of indigenous cultures. I'm not surprised that Sudan is selling their soul to the oil-devil..we are talking about a country where it's legal to commit FGM and stoning women. We are talking about a country that actually defends these and other barbaric practices. We are talking about a country that has been fighting for decades if not atleast 1 century. I guess yes, we can get all pissed about it.But the reality is....when the demand for a resource is high, people get killed and people get disenfranchised. This is nature. Instead of hollering about the evil oil companies...we ought to be hollering about every single government and society on this planet that insists on being oil-dependent. we should be hollering that not enough oil-alternatives are being used and researched. Oil companies only exist because we created a market for it. They are rich because we refuse to use oil-alternatives. They can get away with murder because we want their product and dont want to be inconvienced. Oil was used to run the machines that created our computers for gads sake. so until the people of the world wake up and quit being so friggin needy for oil...this kind of travesty is gonna happen and continue to happen until we finally run out of oil.
Otter, I'm sure you wrong about this. The rest of your post rings true, but the Alaska natives are one of the only indigenous peoples who have actually kept most of their lands. Where it's been taken in the past, equal has been returned. The native corporations are some of the largest land holding corporations in the country. Anyway, a bit off subject of the Sudan.
fucking sad man. fucking sad. people need to rise above petty shit like oil and realize that one human life is more important than the whole country's oil reserves. life is the key, people. live and let live.
It seems that in the end every (civil)war has something to do with property.. and that's not so surprising.. didn't the Hitler start with creating 'Lebensraum'.. people always want more then they have.. and they want especially what others have.. oil or no oil.. I mean.. check West-Africa.. especially countries like Sierra Leone.. there are so many resources there.. diamonds.. and that resulted in a huge and extremely brutal civilwar.. (the war in Salone was known for the number of amputees and childsoldiers).. We are human and apparentally it seems to be human nature to be greedy and willing to kill. Maybe a few politicians really plan big conspiracies to wipe out tribes to get to the oil.. but the common rebel only fights for his own sake, to get better or simply to survive... imho.
I think you're getting it mixed up Skip. There are two conflicts in Sudan, one in the South and one in the West. Most oil is in the south, but that conflict has come a long way towards being worked out. The conflict in the west, which has been getting all the press lately, is not about oil. What bothers me is that if the US went in and tried to end the genocide we'd probably get "war for oil" conspiracies and anti-american hatred. After all look what happended in Somalia - no support there and then we decided to sit out Rwanda. Tragic.
